Monterey conditions. (let's keep it going )

I live in Monterey and dive a couple of days a week. I *always* take tides and currents into account. I moved here from the Puget Sound a few years ago, where tides were always of paramount importance. They're not nearly as big here but they do matter. -Adrian

    Rude Divers on the Boat

I alternate between dive flags and referee stripes (I referee women's roller derby). Neither make me better at either task, but it's fun to see people doing double takes when they glance downwards. -Adrian

Diving the PNW vs. Nor CAL

I've done both. I lived on the Puget Sound for 4 years and have been living in Monterey for the last 2 years. What Glenn said is exactly right. Oregon divers flock to the Puget Sound every week because Oregon diving isn't worth doing. Be prepared for greatly reduced visibility in the Sound...

    Mandatory tracking device for divers?

You seem fairly presumptuous about certain things from where I'm standing. When I've dived the U-boat I've done it on my rebreather with adequate bailout. Only a fool would dive it on an aluminum 80. I can't speak for anyone, but I wouldn't. Not interested. Again, presumptions on your...

What I am missing - The use of rebreathers.

Bravo Steve. I agree completely. I think what bothers me so much about the naysayers is that they're so quick to jump on the bandwagon of blaming the tool when a rebreather diver suffers a fatality. "They were diving a rebreather and they died so it must be the rebreather's fault" seems to be...

    Mandatory tracking device for divers?

I do the first two types of dives, and at some point in the future I'll be doing the third. I'm not going to carry a beacon in my pocket or anywhere else. My family know the calculated risks I take while diving - we've discussed them and I share my predive planning and risk analysis with them...

What I am missing - The use of rebreathers.

Anecdotal and completely unsupported by any body of evidence that I've ever seen. -Adrian

    Monterey diving

I'd STRONGLY recommend diving the Breakwater rather than Lobos. They're much more enjoyable dives if you're not used to the cold water and heavy gear that's required in Monterey. It's also less expensive - Lobos fees are ridiculous, and you WILL have to pay them at Lobos. No way around it. -Adrian

What I am missing - The use of rebreathers.

I used to believe rebreathers were magic boxes waiting to kill me if I turned my back on them. Now I *know* they are, and I wouldn't dive any other way. -Adrian

    Monterey diving

Yes, those are really the rental prices, and they're not out of line for diving in this part of the world. All of the shops in Monterey have similar prices. Lobos prices have gone up dramatically. I'd recommend diving the Brealwater and saving the park entrance fee and divers fee. If you...

Monterey conditions. (let's keep it going )

It was recorded a week ago. It's lovely footage but I'm not sure it should be called "live" going out in North America. -Adrian

Recommended time to check in at Point Lobos?

The earlier the better. On weekends the lineup to get in the gate starts well before they open for the day. -Adrian

According to this, yes: History Leaves 10 Survivalists ‘Alone’ For Summer | Deadline It's also 1/4 the size of Louisiana so it's not exactly a small island. :) -Adrian

    Question about dive school pricing.

Because people do it ALL the time. I've had students show up for class with gear that should have been condemned years ago - cracked hoses, repurposed (non scuba) tanks, masks that have the rubber rotted away - and then get upset when they're told that gear isn't suitable for their class. It's...

    Diver missing on Andrea Doria

Most people who dive the Doria are china hunters, and diving her never used to lend itself to close together buddy teams. For a long time the standard seemed to be that a buddy pair to descend together, and enter the wreck together. Then one would wait at a predetermined point while the other...

    Diver missing on Andrea Doria

I suspect if the data were normalized to correct for the fact that the JJ does more annual trips than the Seeker (and I believe holds more divers) the difference in the mortality rate wouldn't be statistically significant. -Adrian

    Sea cave in Monterey?

Nowhere I know of, and I've even diving here regularly for a few years now. There are no houses at the top of the Jade Cove cliff. -Adrian
