    First Dive in 20 Years?

I had a 20 year break from diving and I just took the entire OW course again. I was really glad that I did. A lot had changed, and there was a lot I forgot.

    Holding your breath on ascent...

So here is a related question. If you hold your breath during a regular commercial flight ascent (which is up to 8'000 feet or so pressure altitude) will you have a lung over-expansion problem? I think this is physically impossible because of the time it would take, but it is an interesting...

    Holding your breath on ascent...

Ah, ok. I hadn't thought of it that way. I was just picturing the lungs like a balloon, like in all those science fair projects. It makes sense that the lung tissue would fail before the epiglottis.

    Holding your breath on ascent...

One of the things I always wondered is how your lungs actually seal this way? Clearly they do, but I don't understand the mechanism in your throat. When I hold my breath, it feels more like something is closing up so that I can't intake any more air. What I picture for lung overexpansion is...

Is this thread worthy? Split from: OW to Instructor in 23 days

Well, if you quote the part without the question mark, you aren't going to see it. This is a pointless back-and-forth exchange, and I am terminating my involvement in it now. I do appreciate all the honest opinions stated in the thread. Thanks everyone.

Is this thread worthy? Split from: OW to Instructor in 23 days

It was a question. I have no dog in this hunt. I'm not trying to make fun of these kinds of programs, or to support them. I am OW certified with about 10 dives to my name. You mentioned in another thread that you got certified as an instructor through one of these types of programs. I'm...

Is this thread worthy? Split from: OW to Instructor in 23 days

The title of my post is not misleading. The course is OW to Instructor, and it takes 23 days. It was a sincere question about what the more experienced people think about this kind of course. Isn't that what this kind of forum is for? Wow, that is really friendly, constructive advice...

advanced to specialty instructor a good price ??

If you compare it to the 23 day course, it is certainly a much better deal. 3 months of training in anything for $5300 seems pretty cheap. However, if no one will hire you, I don't know that you could consider it a good deal.

advanced to specialty instructor a good price ??

You may want to check this thread. It is covering a similar discussion http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/advanced-scuba-discussions/343822-ow-instructor-23-days.html The consensus is that no one will hire you with this kind of course if you do not have the experience to do along with it.

OW to Instructor in 23 days

Actually, the program title is AOW to Instructor, but the requirements say you just have to be OW. AOW is just a few dives anyway. I don't see that it makes any difference. I don't see where you get this conclusion from. Whether you think the program is worthwhile or not, there are people...

OW to Instructor in 23 days

I am actually not seriously considering it. But I have taught a bunch of college courses as an adjunct professor, and I taught high school for a while as well. I used to be a certified jumpmaster. Teaching is one of the most fun things I have ever done, but it doesn't pay well at all so I...

OW to Instructor in 23 days

Let's see. 23 days; 2 trips / day @ ~$50/trip. Throw in a few night dives. Call it $2500 for 50 dives. I can see how that might be a better way to gain experience quickly.

OW to Instructor in 23 days

I would have posted this in "Going Pro" but I am not enrolled in any professional courses, so I can't. I was wondering what people thought of course like this: http://www.keysidc.com/pkgCoursePriceListing.php 23 days and $4200 to take you all the way from OW to Instructor. I suspect...

Someone looking for glasses lost at Aquapalooza in Austin

If we assume 100' of water, combining GPS and drift gives a circle with 130' radius. That gives about 53,000 sq ft (about 1.2 acres) to search for something that is almost invisible.

Someone looking for glasses lost at Aquapalooza in Austin

Yeah, I wonder what "compensate you for your time" really means. I expect it means that if you find them they will give you $20 and if you don't find them you will get a disgusted look and $0.

(not me) At least they have GPS coordinates: I can't post URLs, but if you search Austin Craigslist for "Scuba" you will find it.

    New user from Austin, TX

Hey everyone, I'm a old-timer with not very many dives under my belt. I originally got certified in 1980, and the instruction back then consisted mostly of the instructor telling horror stories about people who died by doing stupid things. I had a few dives throughout the years, but not...

    Sealife DC 1200 Pictures

Just got as 1200 today and did a night-time pool test. The camera was very easy to set up.
