New to Narragansett, Rhode Island and looking for a boat, shop, or dive club to join

Hi there, Old Colony Amphibians is a longstanding local dive club in the RI/MA border area. Come on down to a meeting sometime and check us out...we have a lot of characters and a lot of fun. Home | OCA Dive Club Steve

    good day buggin

Had a successful hunt while shore-diving in Rockport this past Saturday. All bugs in the pic are legal (smallest is just barely over the gauge, the biggest was about 1/4" under the big side), to give an idea of the size range. The largest (w/new claw) weighed in at 2.6 lbs, my biggest yet. Would...

Torpedo ray sitings - Lanes Cove

We saw a big one out by the reef outside Plum Cove, two weeks back. Very cool (and surprising in low viz).

Question for those w/MA lobster license...

It's in the literature somewhere from massfishhunt.org, but you only need to display the last 5 digits of your customer ID. Be aware that this ID may change if you skip a year of registering for a permit. HTH! Steve

It doesn't get a lot nearer than this

Just to provide a contrasting positive experience: Was diving at the same location (OGB) last year with my fiancee. We decided to do a long surface swim out towards the green can to explore that area a bit. We were towing (and always do) a flag. A lobsterman came by to check his pots and...

    conditions at King's Beach?

In case anyone's interested, we got there and some divers coming out reported 3' viz. So we drove over to Wetherill only to experience exactly the same thing.

    conditions at King's Beach?

Anyone happen to know the conditions around King's today? We're thinking of doing a dive or two there tomorrow but the wind is expected from the west so we may hit the Plymouth area instead.... thanks! Steve

Looking for an update on conditions in Fort Wetherill

Checked out conditions at Wetherill yesterday and it was churning up a storm so we passed. Ended up getting wet in Bluebell Cove in Portsmouth. Viz was only 2' but we got underwater for the first time in 2012. Steve

    Surface Report- Folly's Cove

Dove Folly early afternoon on the 4th, incoming tide. It was VERY calm. Viz was not great, actually, but the lack of surge really made the right side and out quite a nice dive as the usually active silt-covered kelp was very still. Steve

good NE shop/instructor for search & recovery ?

Thanks all for the responses. For now my goal is pretty simple: to learn the basics of using a reel/spool to cover an area for scallops, find my way back to a (hopefully) full first bag when I'm finished, then use a lift bag to get it all to the surface for pick-up. S&R seems like a good way to...

good NE shop/instructor for search & recovery ?

Hello all, Looking for recommendations for a good class (instructor) in MA area for learning the skills included in S&R, like using spools, shooting bags, etc. Anxious to try scallop diving this year and am interested in S&R in general as a possible diving activity going forward. Would prefer...

    Flounder Attack!!!

Can anyone point me to the MA regulations on tickling flounder into a catch bag, if in fact such a regulation exists? Do they treat it the same as angling, in which case you need a salt water permit? I went ahead and just purchased the permit (only $10) after not being able to find anything...

    Memorial Day Weekend Dive Report

Nice report, thanks for posting. Great shot of the lumpfish...haven't seen one of those yet. We dove Folly on Monday and you're not kidding about getting colder w/depth...it was about an 8 degree drop from surface to 20' (think we saw 47 deg at that depth). Steve

    Friday...race point P-town

Holy bugs, batman. No wonder we saw none at Brant Rock yesterday...y'all cleaned out the bay! ;) Great pic! BTW, This is my first spring as a diver...I'm told we still have a couple more weeks before the bugs start showing up near shore...?

    Ft. Wetherill 4/30/11

First dive of the season, dove wet at Wetherill around midday (low tide). Began the dive under sunny skies, came up to gloomy clouds. Surface was like a lake. Swam out east wall of right cove, then back the other side. Hit 33' max, 47F, 60 minute dive. Viz was maybe 10' inside the cove, less...

Salem MA area looking for some dive info

As others have said, Cape Ann will be your closest (and best) bet for shore diving if you'll be in Salem. In terms of finding folks to dive with, there are regular (i.e. every weekend) shore dive groups run by area clubs and dive shops. We dove with Mass Diving's (out of Natick, MA) shore...

    Diving in Boston area 1/29/11

I'm pretty sure Mass Diving in Natick rents drysuits. If you're looking to shore dive, contact the MetroWest Dive Club (just google them) as they have a group of diehards who shore dive almost every weekend, I think around 10am. They might let you join up. hth, Steve

marking tanks with your lobster lic ID#

Yep, sorry JBert but as the abstract you quoted says, must be MA resident or own property (that's what the non-res fee is for). We're lucky they even allow us residents to catch em...or even allow us to breathe in this state! :shakehead:
