    Closed AL80s, HP100s

All, I must apologize. I sold the HP100s and promptly left the area for work for a few weeks. Back home now. AL80s are still available.

    Closed AL80s, HP100s

ALL TANKS HAVE SOLD. Thanks to everyone who indicated interest! I have 3 AL80s and 2 HP100s that I'm looking to sell locally in the DC Metro area. Tanks are in good shape but most of my diving has been while traveling so I figure they'll get more love from someone who's doing more local...

    Shore Diving Kona (& Nearby)

Anyone local interested in doing some shore dives in or around Kona next week? I'll be in town and would enjoy meeting up with some locals for a couple of easy shore dives. Having a buddy for a black water dive would be pretty great too.

Gear Advice for Novice Divers From Novice Diver

Re-reading this I want to make a clarification. I wasn't intending to mean that vis is unnecessary. I meant learning to do you own vis is, in my opinion, not a good investment in time or money. Doing vis regularly, either on your own or by paying for it, is most definitely necessary.

    Testing Equipment

Why would you service gear that hasn't been tested first? If you have a tank and regs, breathe off of it. If you don't have problems with it, put it in some shallow water and do it again. If no freeflows, dive it. If you find any issues, then pay to get it serviced or service it yourself...

Gear Advice for Novice Divers From Novice Diver

There is absolutely no reason you can't service your own gear as a new diver. Read 2 books on reg service (see this thread: Wolfinger's "Regulator Savvy" versus Harlow's "Regulator Maintenance and Repair" ) and you'll have all the knowledge you need to service nearly every reg made. Hell, I...

    DIY wetsuits

@JamesBon92007 it is about 2 inches. I would guess the horizontal stretch is maybe 25%. My daughter doesn't stretch it that much because I wanted to give her some room to grow. The key here is to get the "4 way stretch" that way it doesn't really matter that much what orientation you have the...

Scuba kit package vs piece by piece

Count me in the camp of buying used versus new. I am also a BP/W user but don't believe that's the right choice for everyone and buying used in BP/W won't save you as much as buying used in jacket BC. Here's something I wrote a while back about buying used gear: Buying used, a discriminating...

    ScubaBoard's greatest gift

Greatest gift? Knowledge. Without question, that is I think the most widespread. Friendships absolutely are the most meaningful to individuals but overall I think the sharing of information across the planet is Scubaboard's greatest gift. I've dived with a maybe 10 SB members, met a bunch...

    DIY wetsuits

@JamesBon92007 basically, I just stitch spandex or some other "4 way stretch" material as a side panel for legs. Think "jammers" type swim shorts with neoprene front and back panels and spandex sides. A couple of darts for the waist and you've got a tailored fit. It simplifies fit because you...

    DIY wetsuits

So we're headed to Monterey next month and I have a lot of neoprene that I'd like to use to make suits for the kids. So far I've been making neoprene vests and shirts with spandex side panels and sleeves so no need for gluing. With real full suits, however, I'd like to glue the seams as...

    Drysuit undersuit

The only thing to really consider, in my admittedly limited 10ish dry dives, is whether your "street clothes" will be comfortable as a warmth layer under your dry suit. I've used fleece pants, runner tights, and wool sweaters with no problems at all. I did end up making my own one-piece fleece...

Where can you look up gear ratings?

With respect to regs, this is just a bad comparison. It's not like actually comparing a Hyundai to a Mercedes... it's more like comparing a Camry to an Accord... more or less the same thing with slightly different features. Both are (historically) incredibly reliable and reasonable choices and...

    Blue Heron Bridge Trolls III

Had a comedy of errors for our night dive Wednesday. Three of us without buddies tried to partner up. Lost one member early on to a wet-breathing reg after I had forgotten to get some weights at the shop when I picked up a rental tank and reg. Then my inflator valve stuck and I couldn't get...

Where can you look up gear ratings?

This is the best independent review site you're going to find for scuba gear as a whole. If you're looking toward technical gear, throw decostop in there as well. Any site dedicated to providing gear reviews will not provide an unbiased set of reviews that are even remotely complete. They are...
