How to vet a dive shop

A liability by sitting in their observation room or on the side of the pool? My sister wasn't trying to tell me anything. She simply didn't validate my fears or past bad experiences. Trust me on that. I know her better than you.

How to vet a dive shop

watching how he structured the learning setting, interacts with students, deals with problems. A whole host of things. Come to find out the other person in my sister's class was less than an ideal student so much so that he ignored my sister at times and didn't even tell her how to inflate her...

How to vet a dive shop

I dunno. There were SEVERAL issues with him. If you read the whole thing you'd see that many people were appalled and agreed that i should be upset. The guy doesn't have a great reputation around here apparently so I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels wronged, not to mention the rest of my...

How to vet a dive shop

I know but we had not seen the groupon and didn't find out until we were in the first class and had already paid $600 for the 2 of us. We were the only ones who paid full price. I think he was cutting corners to save money since he had offered and sold so many Groupons. I have let it go after...

How to vet a dive shop

I think you are right. But while Utila may be one of the cheapest places in the world to get certified, getting there definitely is not cheap.

How to vet a dive shop

I would have been on the side of the pool if the instructor allowed it or in their observation room. Not in the pool.

How to vet a dive shop

Yes we told him. We signed up in early August, the trip was for mid to late October. The next classroom sessions available weren't until September. He was short staffed and had offered a half off Groupon (unbeknownst to us at the time) so I think he was overwhelmed.

Here is the link to my post about the previous dive shop. I tried, I really did. Disappointed

How to vet a dive shop

thank you. The bad experience I had was with a shop here in town when I first tried to get certified. I've been on several dives through discover scuba or "resort courses" and they've been fine. My best dive was in Utila with a great dive shop there. I'm tempted to go back there and get certified.

How to vet a dive shop

thank you very much for the advice. I did read a review where someone did tag along on one of the trainings so I don't think the shop would've had a problem with it. I think it was more that my sister didn't want me to go and that caused a bit of a tussle between us. I've decided she's probably...

How to vet a dive shop

I'm not exactly sure when the classes start. They are every Saturday for several consecutive Saturdays in a row so the schedule is very rigid which I'm not in love with.

How to vet a dive shop

I did and most of them are good reviews but I'm still a bit gun shy from the first experience. My sister said I should still ask for the discount even though I didn't book before the deadline which is today.

How to vet a dive shop

I'm sure this has been asked before, sorry I didn't search first. My sister has suddenly decided she is interested in diving. She found a shop about 45 minutes from here and we went together and watched a video about it. I was able to speak with the shop owner but not an instructor. I have...

Request for travel and/or logistics advice - Cat Island

You'll need to fly to Nassau (NAS) and take a domestic carrier (Sky Bahamas) to the Bight airport. From there you'll need to taxi to Hawks Nest Marina.

Thinking of heading to the Bahamas in January seeking advice

No shops on Long Island but you can rent tanks from Stella Maris Resort. I think they are $15. There are numerous nice coral heads about 15 minutes by boat from the marina but I'm not sure where you can anchor. I doubt the marina can accommodate that size boat and the waters around the...

    Clarance town, Long Island Bahamas

Hi, I just returned from Long Island on Saturday. We went diving with Robert Coakley out of Stella Maris Resort in the north. And as far as I know (and I've been there 5 times now) there isn't anyone renting tanks or gear in the south and there is certainly no dive shop. Tanks and gear are...

Planning a dive trip in 2016

I'm sorry you haven't gotten any responses yet. I can't offer any first hand knowledge other than Grand Bahama being the best known place to dive with tiger sharks and Bimini is good for hammerheads in the winter time. Here is a liveaboard that does both but it's booked up at the moment...

    Bimini questions

If you're talking about the Resorts World Bimini ferry, just know that they are highly despised by the conservation world. They are the ones that did the dredging that caused huge silt clouds as mentioned in the first reply. Silver has some pretty cheap flights from Miami as an alternative to RWB.
