Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

I see some exotic speculations about the bump or thump being something exploding, a smoldering fire reigniting, etc. Given the timeline: Bump or thump, opening the wheelhouse door and seeing flames, I would guess (note that word) it was simply something structurally compromised collapsing...

^ This. For anyone whose job it is to really understand the root cause of problems, rather than just blaming it on 'Human Error' - which is common excuse - may I recommend: "The field Guide to Undertanding 'Human Error'"; an excellent book that makes it painfully obvious that in many cases...

Legal considerations for the Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

scubafanatic, I have no idea why your posts appear to be filled with such hate and vitriol. Though they may add some small content to the thread, it pales when placed aside the needless negative adjectives. I thought this was a legal thread, not a rant thread. O2

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

From your description, sounds like you want the exit to to span from one bunk corridor to the other. This would put a hole across basically the ENTIRE exit path from the solon. We're not talking broken legs, we're talking about everyone that comes up the staircase falling back down into the bunk...

And a huge hole in the floor of the salon that people coming up the stairway and heading out the salon exit would fall into... The floor above any escape hatch must basically be made unusable and out of the flow of traffic. Hence my design, such as it is, above. Roak

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

If you were to pull three and replace it with a ladder, the ladder would come up to the middle of the hatch. Better configuration than now exists, but still difficult to use the exit. So we're getting waaaay ahead of ourselves here, but if someone made me king, I'd tear out 7U, 8M, 9L, 24U, 25M...

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

The thing I keep coming back to is that absolutely no one from below escaped. This [to me] means one of two things: The entire bunk area was overcome by fumes incapacitating everyone. The entire salon was filled with flames before anyone in the bunk area was aware of the problem. Given the open...

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

Since you're asking for a cost/benefit analysis, the correct number would be six bunks, not three. 10U, 11M, 12L, 27U, 28M and 29L. Roak

Please, everyone. THERE WERE NO CLOSED DOORS BETWEEN THE BUNKS AND THE OUTSIDE, PERIOD! Roak

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

To put this in perspective, the bunk area is maybe 25 feet long (estimate), so to go from front to back with short, 2 foot strides is only 12 steps, probably less... Using the phrase "All the way", though in the strictest sense true, seems a bit excessive for such a short distance. Roak

    Questions about history of octos...

Seriously? Why would they? Cave diving was more taboo than voodoo gas in the 80s. The agencies and manufacturers were more than willing to adopt safer practices from cave diving, but there was no reason to credit them. That's not good nor bad, just a statement of fact. If you had taken an OW...

Yhea, whatever, I'll just let you follow tursiops link to the NOAA Diving Manual 4th edition review that was posted. Make sure you get right on it and correct their mistakes. I think you're confusing vests (now called snorkling vests) with BCDs. My Dacor vest had a CO2 cartridge in it - the...

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

I mentioned this in passing in a previous reply, but let me be explicit: The fire need not have spread quickly if it took awhile to detect. If the anchor watch was in the wheelhouse, they couldn't see the deck. They certianly could not see inside the dining area. If there were no indication...

Help with my ears after diving

Let me address this one specific part of your question. I think you have a similar "problem" that I have. "Problem" in quotes because it's not really one. Sometimes, like after exercise, my right eustachian tube completely opens up for 10-30 minutes. Normally your eustachian tubes are collapsed...
