Suggestions for manatee snorkeling in Crystal River?

I stayed at the Plantation last month for a couple of days. Nice place. I ate breakfasts across the street at Grannys(sp)?. Great local establishment. I enjoyed the Rainbow River drift dive. The viz at Kings Cavern, at the time, was poor.

Is "flipper" really the wrong word?

Sometimes I will hear the flippers thing from students. On THAT terminology I will correct them.

To ALL newbies please read this:

Agreed. My non-diving GF was sitting next to me on a dive charter a few years ago. One of the other divers mentioned something about her oxygen tank. I did not correct her. My GF leans over and goes "that's not oxygen, what is she talking about?" The oxygen thing always gets me.

Is there a comparable in quality and price ?

I own a SolaFx 8 mil. Have at least 80-100 cold water dives on it. It is not semi dry. I believe BARE has a similar suit. My suit has held up well. It treats me better than I treat it!

    Portage reports?

Al, I have not been to Portage since 2011. Viz was 3 feet. But someone on FB said it was better than that this year. WS viz has been consistently good this year. Gilboa's has been 15 feet after the classes, and much better before the classes. I would say Gilboa averaged 25 feet last weekend.

Short notice - Anyone want to dive Whitestar tomorrow 9/7

Good diving with you, Mike. Viz was 20 feet on first dive, 15 feet on the second dive. Max depth was 47 feet. Min temp was 58 degrees. WS fairly busy considering the weather. There was a party across the way with the swimmers at the beach area. Could hear the music. Usual excellent service...

Short notice - Anyone want to dive Whitestar tomorrow 9/7

Mike, I can do Sunday if you still need a dive bud.

Ideas for places to dive in Detroit area, was thinking about Gilboa or White star

Both White Star and Gilboa should be quiet during the week. Gilboa definitely busy during the weekend. Both are good choices. Gilboa's shallow side is generally 45 feet or less. WS may be better for your wife's concerns. I would do the shore entry and dive the South wall. Pleasant fun dive.

Gilboa Quarry - Deep Dive review

Thanks for the well written trip report. I have dived there frequently in the past 4 years. Have had a season pass for the last two. But on the rare occasion I dive the deep side, I have to give Gilboa a dive plan. At first, the rules bothered me. Not anymore. Although I have a couple of buds...

Anyone at Gilboa this weekend? 8/10-811?

I will be there Sunday at 9:30 with one other bud. You are welcome to join us.

    Diving at Gilboa Quarry?

Andy, I would recommend the drive to Gilboa. There are lots of shops that go there, but primarily for classes. I believe there is a Breast Cancer Dive event at Whitestar on the 3rd...where I am sure you could find a bud. I will check my work schedule for the 2nd to see if I can do Gilboa.

Elonna, Thanks for diving with me! Pop up storms, crowds, and poor viz..we still had a good time.

Ohio Bound. Where/What/With who to dive?

Welcome to Ohio(soon). Whitestar and Gilboa are closest to you. There are shallower quarries South. Northpointe in Newark, Circleville Twin Quarries near Columbus, and Lakeview RV Park near Lancaster.

    Quarry conditions (White Star& Portage)?

Glad to hear about Portage. None of the buds in my dive circles have been there in a while. I was last there at the Dan BBQ in 2011. I "found" the plane by bumping into it. There was a young lady diving/snorkeling near us wearing a bikini. Surreal. Yes, I put that in my logbook. Have not been...

    Travel with SEI card

Glen, I agree with the above posts. No problem with your card. If you get a chance, try the cenotes. I recommend Dos Ojos. Shallow and beautiful And yes, the viz will be very different from our Ohio quarries! Shockingly so. Will take you a few minutes to adjust to it! Have fun. Dave.

    Lakeview conditions?

Al, The only Ohio quarries I have heard about so far this year have been Gilboa and Circleville. Gilboa: 30-40 feet; Circleville: 5-10 feet. I assume the diving season has had a slow start this year due to the cold/grey spring we have had. I was at Gilboa Sat and it was very busy with divers...

    Solo shore diving...

No flames from me. I think the Coz shore dives are underrated. I have done em from Blue Angel. Hotel Coz, SCC and Villablanca. Max depth is around 25 feet? I especially like the night dives. Perhaps you can hire a DM to go with you for a reasonable rate from one of the shops. Or find a bud. A...

    Akumal Dive recommendations please...

Informational follow up here.. Just got back from the Bahia Principe Coba. Non diving GF as well. Place is HUGE. 2 ocean(sea) dives and 3 cenote dives with Scubaquatics. Instructors were all first rate. Shore entries and exits to/from boat. No dock. Dives were good and safe. Lots O' large...
