Getting my 11 y/o into diving

very good plan, emphasis on asking him if he feels ready and willing to dive.

Attaching a torch/flashlight to your BCD so you can use it but not drop it.

The Goodman soft mount at DGX is $10. DGX Soft Handmount

Gray whale encounters: Puerto Chale vs Puerto San Carlos (and La Paz scuba operator question)

In response to one of your questions re La Paz, it seems like it would be fine to combine scuba & snorkeling at los Islotes (the sea lion colony). And I seem to remember that various operators offered a combo of whale shark snorkeling and diving with the sea lions at los Islotes, but I cant...

Question Florida folks: What's your cold threshold?

{Smugly} I am built of hardier stuff than you right coasters. I have and could do down to 74 deg F in a rashguard (Im just doing 2 dives max a day). But I have a 3/2 mm FS now, so I would bring it in the winter.

    For all You Advanced Snorkelers

I suppose none of the criticizers in this thread has heard of the concept of redundancy? What if a SPECTRE bad guy cuts one of the snorkel tubes with his BFK? This dude you saw is ready for anything.

Where to go: Mexico in July? Isla Mujeres? Baja North or South?

With 25 days total, you may consider splitting your time in the Yucatan between Cozumel (focused on ocean diving) & the mainland (for ocean diving, cenotes, a day trip to whaleshark snorkel and non-scuba activity (ruins, beaches, Maya culture, etc)). Logistics in the mainland may be tricky, as...

    Hi from Spain

Whats good is that you have diving opportunities in your backyard, on the Costa Brava, so you never have to get rusty. I had 2 nice dives in the Cap de Creus from Roses, I understand that L'Estartit & the Medes Islands are even better.

Question Only Instructor wears dive computer (extra charge if I want one)

He may have not been logged in and still read the never ending back and forth on whether they should teach decompression theory and/or tables in OW and decided this thread wasnt helpful to him.

Question Only Instructor wears dive computer (extra charge if I want one)

While this is true, this is still supposedly a thread in response to his question. Obviously this thread has been hijacked, but we need not all go along with the hijack. Part of the reason the OP may not have re-posted here is bc he may have read some of the responses and decided they were not...

Trip Report Iron Bottom Sound (Solomon Islands -- Feb 2024)

Wow, huge amount of history on these dives. I never even realized that dives re the Guadacanal campaign were feasible. I guess you dont hear about them much, because of how painstaking the logistics. Thank you for sharing.

Question Only Instructor wears dive computer (extra charge if I want one)

OP, hopefully, you were taught to monitor your own dives. This isnt a training dive, YOU are responsible for your own dives. Generally, that means having a computer and knowing how to use it to make sure you dont stay too deep for too long. So I would recommend you have that ability - to...

    Slippery Ramp=Foolish Question?

Are there rocks/structure on the side you can hold on to? Thats what we do on the boat ramp at Pt Lobos, which is super slick. And if you fall - start crawling / swimming.

    Does hookah diving affect cetaceans?

Unless they're captive (which I would never do, bc its cruel to the animals), what are the chances you will ever even see dolphins, porpoises or whales on a dive? Doubt they would ever come close enough to matter.

    Bright Weights for BP/W

Im wondering how having all that weight up high will do your posture in the water. I see head down /feet up. Not good. Also, whats the point of making the weight bright? As mentioned, a simple weight belt, and some trim weights on the tank strap (if needed) is easier and better.

    Basic camera options

I have my go pro on a soft goodman handle (actually attached to a small light that is on the goodman goodman handle) I film when there's something interesting and forget about it the rest of the time. I dont imagine filming the entirety of a ~ hour dive will yield interesting results, but then...

    Finding dive buddies?

I have used local facebook scuba groups, as well as scuba groups on Meetup.com (although not for several years), and the regional forums here, to find shore diving buddies locally and in SoCal & Hawaii. I feel facebook may have the most immediate results.

Where to go: Mexico in July? Isla Mujeres? Baja North or South?

I dont quite know what you mean by Sea of Cortez "north" or "south". I tend to thing of the best land-based diving locales to be Cabo Pulmo, La Paz and maybe Loreto (all relatively south). Note on La Paz, in July, the sea lion colony at Los Islotes (a very popular site) will be off-limits for...

    Regulator Necklace Setup

Personally, I like the necklace they sell on ex-leisure pro. No moving parts, holds the reg very securely https://www.scuba.com/p-xsssrn10/highland-by-xs-scuba-silicone-regulator-necklace-10

    Baja California

Ive never been to Cabo Pulmo. La Paz is probably better in terms of non-diving things. Its a nice mid-size town with AMAZINGLY GOOD food, especially seafood, and more amenities, I believe. As far as the diving, as noted, La Paz has longer boat rides. Its most popular dive is probably los...
