You can rent all you need at Avalon on Catalina. Dive the Dive Park with its stairs and railings - pretty easy. Usually much calmer and clearer than mainland. Snorkle first to get adjusted. I'd call the dive shop(s) there and get the prices etc etc. Plus Catalina and Avalon are pretty cool...
The box jellies on the Big Island are common esp on night dives. I find they have very mild stings but I suppose (like bees) a person could be sensitive/allergic. I don’t stop diving when stung but otoh it IS briefly irritating. Never hear people complain about them but wearing a thin wetsuit...
Like Hoag says...maybe yes maybe no. I think very clear water in Cozumel tends to reward filters but ymmv.
you should get a couple filters and try your gopro with and without,,,maybe even the same subject, same angle. Lights of course can made filter unneeded if real close to subject or...
If you can relax and perform underwater in cold, crappy conditions as a newbie I think you are a bit ahead of the newbie who learns in perfect tropical waters. Certainly anxiety-wise. If you were to switch environments you'd expect the tropical-trained diver to have many more issues and...
Not absolutely necessary if you are proficient with tables and obey them and stick to your dive plan etc etc -BUT a really really nice thing to have (things don't always go to plan) and you will almost certainly get one eventually anyways. A basic user-friendly wrist/console model (even used)...
Be careful because Hawaii only accepts a certain type of test and it’s the nasal probe which has a delayed result so your “window” is tight. Be very certain you get it done right and within time frame.
Yeah, they’re little artificial reefs. Sea creatures don’t have human esthetic. I cringe at “ Harbor Clean Ups” because of all the little critters wiped out.
The guy (or gal)at the trailer/dive shop at the casino will usually let you stash small stuff with them. I just would give them a small waterproof box I had with cell/ vCard etc.
Where should I stay? It seems like San Pedro is the best option as all but the Spectre depart from San Pedro. Is that a nice area?
No, it’s not.
You should do all you can to stay in Avalon. You won’t save money by commuting by ferry and staying in an LA hotel. My 2ct.
You can easily rent tanks/weights on Catalina and for Channel Islands. In fact, I always rent mine with Catalina Divers Supply right at the Casino park as it minimizes the schlepping. My 2ct. Dive locations are good. Laguna Beach and San Diego have options too. Fall is the best time of year...
I had a mild case in November and tested myself gradually- no impairment. My brother and 2others also had zero symptoms or impairment.
Just did first dive last night, no issues. Yes, media does hype this but OTOH it is devastating to some people. Turn a negative into a positive and donate...
Looks like a barracuda. 98%
I would like some help identifying this black long fish in the middle left of the photo. I didn’t see this until I looked at photo carefully. It’s taken from Olowalu, Maui. I tried to do a google search but didn’t find anything. Thanks!
I remember when the LPI came out. It was a pretty big improvement in safety and convenience.
Not sure eliminating a single hose is worth jettisoning that benefit, even if it’s seldom needed. You may need to help someone else in an emergency and that can be exhausting - exactly when you don’t...
I’m very satisfied with Kohala Divers. Why not do some of both Kona and Kohala ? If surf is down you’re in good shape to shore dive too. Honokohau Harbor (dog beach) is also a great dive.
I’m familiar with a guy who swerved when a squirrel ran in front of his sports car. He augered into a tree. There was squirrel fur in his grill. He wasn’t hurt bad but damn.
Swerving is almost always a bad move. Unless it’s a kid.
