Thanks for the update @Doctorfish - What where the water temps when you were there last week?
I assume the white coral is still healing and hopefully will recover. Did the staff mention if scltd had made its way to the island yet?
I don't think Aggressor quite understand the whole trip insurance thing it appears. They cancelled our Philippine Aggressor II trip for April 13th and luckily they offered a full refund of the trip. They said for anything extra like airfare/hotel to file a claim with insurance....that is...
Thanks for the two reports @Kimela. I'm headed there on the 27th and am doing the flight out of LAX like you. I've already paid for "extra legroom" seats as I'm 6'7" but I'm considering bidding on their business class on the way there (did similar when I went to Fiji last). Currently we are...
I'd say if you see algae taking the place where the coral was, then the coral had possibly died from the high temps, sctld....<insert reason here> as Algae won't grow on living coral only dead areas where the coral was living.
Thanks for all the feedback! Sadly it when I booked LC i always...
We had a good trip to LCBR last May - I don't recall seeing any sharks but everything else was normal from what I recall (many eagle rays). No SCTLD around still, and but this was before the ocean warmed up...was 81-82f as i recall. I haven't been to CBBR in a long while other than the wreck...
Good thread, I'm toying around with the idea of going for a week in July/August this year but looking at basically just a liveaboard with no sightseeing and just doing the dive. I'd say @Asanoth is a good rule of thumb for how July/August would look.
Amazing pictures - CBR was my first choice for the PI trip I have next month, but they were booked on the week we will be in Anilao originally. Out plans changed with Aggressor cancelling but we had to keep with who we originally booked with in Anilao.
Thanks @cleomagic we definitely knew this was a possible outcome for sure since we got hit originally on the April 13th trip but it was the latest we could do the trip due to one of our friends having to be back in their country (they aren't from the USA) by May 15th.
I had already taken a peak...
And I spoke to soon, was informed today that the May 4th trip has been cancelled too. At this point we are just switching over to a land based option for that week as there isn't any other boats that have any room open for that week that could accommodate us all.
We ended up rebooking on the May 4th trip, and spent a bunch more money on airline fees (change fee, price difference, and repaying for seats). I'll be spending the week before in Anilao, and if the May 4th one gets cancelled I'm just going to go to PG for the week (and finally save some...
Seems like a screaming good deal to me. I was always interested in the HSS with my a6600 wondering how well it would work (seeing if i could overcome the 1/160 limitation).
Are you meaning SCTLD ? There was a bleaching event everywhere in the Caribbean last October- doesn’t matter where in the Caribbean it was getting hit that was directly tied to the warm water temperatures.
The bleaching events are temporary because of the rise in water temperatures, but most...
The coral bleaching and dying you mentioned wasn't just limited to Cuba in this time frame, this was basically all of the Caribbean last year because of the water temps.
Don't rule out a RX100va vs a RX100 VII, i'd personally rather have a rx100va over the VII (the va offers a bit more versatility than the VII). I'd also check out deals folks have posted on used gear, because you can stretch your dollar quite a bit more on used equipment vs new.
