White.Knight makes a good point: If you're on a charter with a live well, bring two bags. It will keep you from arguing with your buddy about which lobster belongs to whom at the end of the trip.

Lightly buttered and battered then fried I bet they'd make quite a meal. At 100 pounds I don't know if I would dispatch one by biting it between the eyes (see octopus thread).
I use my compass on most dives. I rely on it less during wall dives with excellent visibility, but still refer to it out of habit. Mine is mounted on my console. Choose a compass that is easy to read even in poor conditions.
Do any of you know a good website resource that shows ocean depths along the California coast? The topic came up in a recent conversation. Of particular interest were the trenches off of Northern California, Channel Islands, and LaJolla area.
