That's a bit of a predicament in the sense that, after 10 years, you'd be pretty far out of touch with the basics. But on the other hand, the person guiding you should have got it right (or as close to it as possible since it is ultimately down to the diver to know what they need.)
Ultimately...
Which operation did your son go through? I did some DM stuff in the early 2000s with a shop just north of the airport. Few years later the owner sold everything and moved back to Europe. I'd be shocked if he's still alive. He'd have to be probably in his early 90s now.
Yes better safe than sorry considering the Sandia mountain range can get up there. I know BH was shut down for CV-19 reasons for a bit last year. Sounds like you snuck some dives in at just the right time! Was it busy when you were there?

I'm also curious where you are doing life w/o parole in NM. My term started in 2003 in ABQ for 3 years. I nearly escaped once into CO in 2006 but the chips fell in an unexpected way. Been in NW NM ever since.
Also, there are some pretty cool top-half CPR mannequins that can give feedback regarding compression depth and frequency with little lights in the shoulder. Not too expensive and, as you indicate, you'd like to have the opportunity to practice at will. Great idea to keep up the skill. You could...
I certified as an EMT 18 years ago and yes, amazing how something as simple as mechanical compressions and ventilation can continue to change and vary so much. Quite a bit has phased out to make it easier. You used to have to check pulse in the carotid artery, verify none, then measure with...
Probably going to get flamed but I'm pretty partial to my 6.5 Mares Isotherm semi. Looks like that phased out for the Flexa Z-Therm which functionally appears great, especially with the front zipper. The Isotherm zipper is on the back, shoulder to shoulder, which can be incredibly cumbersome and...
Wow. I was unaware there were so many people named after clearing techniques. Seems like anyone can chalk up their name to equalizing!
Short of an actual physiological reason for difficulty with EQ'ing, I've been surprised over two decades how many people I've run into who don't know "popping...
The vernacular police have arrived on scene! Short answer? You could "boppo" the octo to someone. Call it what you will so long as all divers get home alive and well.
More specifically:
"Deploy" - verb;
to bring into effective action; utilize
All part of the learning process. 20 years into this and I still cringe whenever I'm at a site and I see someone entering/exiting water...dragging one or both regs...through sand or over rocks.
In all reality the setup would be fine...so long as it doesn't result in a threat to the safety of the diver or those around them. That's where the hang up exists for me. He couldn't deploy his octo in an OOA situation under controlled conditions in a pool yet holds OW/AOW certs. The math there...
I'd attribute it mostly to poor training. If one is not taught a certain aspect of a skill or procedure, then they're highly unlikely to get it right by chance.
Good example from 2 days ago: new student enrolled for PADI RD. He got OW/AOW through a different shop so he is new to myself and...
Glad he's ok though (sucks he lost a finger). Like giana said, firearm safety is pretty important stuff. I don't advise using a lighter to see inside the fuel tank in your car either.
