Cave Diving Backup Lights / Rechargeable Batteries

Well years ago the rechargeables in the market were either NiCd or NiMH, which have fast self discharge rates in storage. Li-Ion chemistries have a much slower self discharge rate. NiMH batteries can self discharge 1% a day, Li-Ion is about 1-2% a MONTH.

Inner tube, bungee, o-rings or EPDM for harness

Rigging my backplate harness up for the first time in several years - what are people using to retain their backup lights and inflator these days? I used to use inner tube for the backup lights, and a bungee loop for the inflator - but I see people using EPDM rubber bands, o-rings for the...

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

If it hasn't already been posted, this article contains a transcript of an interview with the owner of Truth Aquatics. It doesn't shed any light on the cause of the fire, but it does give some details on crew actions trying to respond to the blaze, and the location of O2 etc. "I'm Numb": Boat...

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

This is just horrific. I did one of these trips (possibly on Conception) back in 2003 before moving away from California. It was one of the highlights of the time I spent diving in California. My heart aches for the family, friends and crew involved.

In memorium: Rob Davie, aka BigJetDriver

I never met Rob, in fact I never knew BigJetDriver's name was Rob until I saw the thread on TDS about his passing. But his screen persona was one I've seen and interacted with over the years, he was one of the "regulars", one of the people who's posts you read and paid attention to, because they...

Anyone here got a Mitsubishi Montero (not Sport)

Hi, Trying to find out what the tail light configuration on the Mitsubishi Montero 2001 model is like in the US - in Australia this vehicle is sold as the Pajero, and the main tail lights are "dummy" lights, with the only working stop lights in the bumper - basically a cost cutting exercise...

    Whaling thread gone

Colin, Having had no contact from moderators on this issue since the original thread was pulled, other than what Kim and yourself have posted to this thread, unless the discussion is heading in a different direction or becoming a general discussion on the matter, I'm more than happy to be...

Nobel Prize for Environmental Concern: Which Country?

New Zealand seem to have a handle on things - they've turned an introduced pest (brushtail possums) into a burgeoning novelty sock industry :D

    Whaling thread gone

So is it sitting in the moderator forum for cleanup/discussion, or did someone just "disappear" it? I thought thread originators were supposed to be notified when a thread gets pulled.

    Whaling: Right or Wrong?

An interesting article on the company structures involved in the Japanese whaling industry. The US frozen seafood company Gortons is in effect wholly owned by a company with a 31.9% stake in the Japanese whaling fleet. http://oceans.greenpeace.org/en/our-oceans/whaling/gortons

    Whaling: Right or Wrong?

Photo taken in the last 24 hours in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary by Greenpeace. Two harpooned minke whales being dragged aboard a Japanese "research" vessel, destined for the restaurants and school cafeterias of Japan. The video link on the following page is very graphic. The animal...

Suggest a small speargun available online

Hi, Father-in-law's christmas request this year is a small speargun (he's a very experienced certified diver on the FL Gulf coast, long time lobsterer, I believe he used to spear in the past) - what's a good quality speargun that might fit the bill? What qualifies as small - 24"? Not overly...

    Smallest Wing and BP

I was going to post a photo of this wing mounted on a backplate, but seemed to have misplaced it. Anyway in the photo there's only about 1.5-2" of wing protruding around most of the backplate. It's about as small a wing as is practical.

A few pics of a singles Hog rig for cold water

5lb XS Scuba weight pockets work well for hogarthian rigs. Patrick @ OxyCheq just sent me some sample pockets for 2" webbing that are slightly larger - I can stuff 2 x 4lb hard weights, and they might take a single 10lb hard weight, but I can't find those in Oz to try (not that I need 10lb per...

Catching Great Whites from the beach

I've just received a very positive formal response from the club. The Newcastle and Port Stephens Game Fishing Club does not condone these mens' actions at all - the club is taking further action on the issue, and I've also heard that NSW DPI are taking action. Basically sounds like a stop is...
