any suggested spots in San Juans?

Old thread, but did you end up doing any dives around Lopez? I was just out there with a buddy last weekend and found some good and some not-so-good spots.

    My 3-day certification (VERY LONG)

I just have to give another shout out for the 3-day course. I had every word read twice before the class started and felt like I was given all of the tools. A great instructor was likely much of the difference. I actually did my OW classes and pool session one weekend, AOW classes (brief) an...

    Zeagle Backplate Anyone?

When is that fair? So, I just have to decide between the Ranger, or a BP/harness. Does the 44# wing have the ribs like the halcyon wing to hold a single tank stable? Is it compatible with regular BP's or is the Zeagle BP proprietary? Thanks so much. jf

    Zeagle Backplate Anyone?

I'm looking at a Zeagle BP and Wing at my LDS here in Seattle. The BP/harness is $264! Sounds a bit steep, but I may have to go with the Zeagle instead of a FredT or something if I want to DM at the LDS. Anyone have experience with this BP? How about the Zeagle 44# wing?

The Blue Hole, Santa Rosa, NM

ABQ: I bet you've spent some time there! I really enjoy it. I've done trips in the summer when it's 95 degrees on the surface and in the winter when it's 23 degrees... marked difference!

The Blue Hole, Santa Rosa, NM

I DM'd on another trip to the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa, NM. A friend got a great picture of the hole and I wanted to post it here for anyone interested or planning on visiting. I'm actually moving to Seattle soon, so I'm thilled about ocean diving, but the Blue Hole was really a lot of fun for...

    SharkPod Mounted to Boat?

Seems like they could at least be mounted the same distance apart on the boat that they are on a diver (~4 ft). If you mounted it on the bottom at the stern it would theoretically create the same size field as a personal unit... I believe that was 13-16 ft radius. I was hoping it would be...

    SharkPod Mounted to Boat?

I read a story of a sailboat cruiser that wanted to go for a swim in the middle of the Pacific one calm day. After a few minutes in the water, the lady jumped onto the boat quickly and reported a "large fish". She and her husband then spotted it from the boat... a large white-tipped shark...

    The never-ending Jetfin debate...

Yeah, the actual ability to propel yourself is not the only important thing with fins I think. I like my jets because I can rotate the fin and slice the water, use short little kicks for adjustment, etc. Many proponents of splits suggest that a diver swims slow (sightseeing and soforth) the...

    The never-ending Jetfin debate...

I'm speculating, but I wonder if it's because split fins have a performance curve where they provide more propulsion in the range of speeds that a diver normally swims, but not higher. Swimming against current is the equivalent of swimming very fast (in both scenarios, water is passing the diver...

    The never-ending Jetfin debate...

jplacson, I totally agree. And you know, there are those like you that want some decoration and those like me that like it black and plain... they could please both crowds and make both... it's not like they have to make a new mold. I had never considered the ability to adjust trim with...

J&J Baby Shampoo for Mask Defog

I like the loogie method too, but it seems like the shampoo would have the added advantage of cleaning the mask.

J&J Baby Shampoo for Mask Defog

I did an internship with an instructor last weekend and he keeps a bottle of Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo (cut 50/50 with water). He squirts it in his masks and finger scrubs thoroughly. It defogs and cleans surprisingly well.

    The never-ending Jetfin debate...

I have large SP Jets and love them. My favorite thing about them is their maneuverability. I love being able to slice the water sideways to get my fin to the right position to do the stroke that I need. The fact that they fit well in the gear bag is a bonus too. I see what you're all talking...

    Sharks in the Sound

How awesome! Is "six-gill" the actual name of the shark? I haven't heard of that one. Hey, how is the diving in Seattle in general? Thanks. Jeremy

    How do dry hoods work?

Thanks... that helps. I was wondering how it would seal on the face. But latex isn't all that insulating is it? The drysuit I'm looking at (Viking Xtreme) has a latex hood. It doesn't seem like this would keep you all that much warmer. Maybe though since your head loses so much heat. Jeremy

    How do dry hoods work?

Can someone answer me some questions? If you get the latex hood and it leaks, does the water go down the neck or is there still a neck seal keeping you dry even when the hood floods? How does the mask seal on the latex hood? If you flood your mask have you flooded your hood too? How about...

dry suit hood -- latex vs. neoprene

Can someone answer me some questions? If you get the latex hood and it leaks, does the water go down the neck or is there still a neck seal keeping you dry even when the hood floods? How does the mask seal on the latex hood? If you flood your mask have you flooded your hood too? How about...

    DIY Drysuit conversion

I have a bit of a DIY question. It may be completely unfeasible, but I'll ask anyway. I have a neoprene drysuit that I used to use for waterskiing. It seals at the neck, wrists, and ankles. I wonder if it is possible to purchase drysuit valves and install them in this suit to make it work for...

    AUL Backplate and Harness?

The AUL plates are black. Does that mean that they have a powder coat? Can you finish a coated plate without sanding through the coat and creating exposed spots?
