    J-Valve reserve plug?

Yes, when my 1970-ish USD cylinder was refilled in 2009 after a 30 year hiatus and successful hydro, the old single direction burst disk blew and caused the cylinder to dance around the room, knocking a hole in the plaster. Fortunately, the corroded disk blew at a fairly low pressure. Tom...

    Handling octopuses?

On Oahu back in 2009, I signed on for a PADI "Discover Diving" session (having been some 41 years since I had been certified and 30 years since I had last used SCUBA) Lots of fun and it inspired to get a refresher and eventually to go for Divemaster which I completed in 2010. On one of the...

    Dry Suit Boots or Socks

I like my attached boots. I think they're a bit more rugged than the attached socks, but one friend uses rock boots an another uses the sneakers, both with socks. The two drawbacks of the attached boots are: - They are more difficult to dry after a dive since you can't turn them thoroughly...

Looking for a good "THICK" net / mesh = for a short steel tank... ?

I don't see many divers using tank mesh's up this way (NE Massachusetts), but some groups may promote them, I suppose. That said, the coating on the Faber Cylinders is MUCH more rugged than the various paint coatings seen mostly on Aluminum cylinders.

    New diver.

Give Don Stevens or Barb Buntrock a call at Atlantic Aquasport in Rye, NH. They usually have shore dives scheduled on Saturdays during the summer. All certified divers are welcome. They also have a nice in-house saltwater pool for checking out your gear and practicing skills. BTW, I...

Visiting the NE from Germany - Questions about buddies and gear

I would recommend checking in with the Metrowest Dive Club web site. The club has "Date@8" dives every saturday and would be happy to have you join them. They meet at the Burger King Restaurant on Rt. 128 in Beverly (on the way to Cape Ann) 0800. Usually two groups form - one for a low stress...

    Why waste money on training!?

YMCA (for me, at least). Many of the early instructors had Navy UDT training, as well. According to Silent World, Cousteau started out spearfishing with Dumas and some other folks and had some experience using the le Prieur free-flowing (non-demand) system, but I don't know whether he was...

    New England Regulators

I dive off of Cape Ann in Massachusetts from May through the end of October. I own an Alpha 8 and an old Sherwood Oasis. Neither has frozen up on me. The Alpha manual recommends it be used above 50 F. The first stage (mine is a balanced piston) is not environmentally sealed and could...

Jerry F. Comeau, my instructor, mentor, friend and partner has passed away

Jerry (along with Fred Calhoun) was my first scuba instructor back in1968. I'll never forget Jerry's favorite expression back then: "What's YOUR name?" Usually he said this when somebody messed up, but one night at the Wakefield YMCA, he asked me that question and then handed me my 1st "C...

    New diver

Welcome Yousef. You'll want to take scuba training from a recognized agency if you haven't done so already. I just noticed there is a Facebook page entitled Scuba Libya where you will find other divers who will know more about training and certification in your area. Checking Google, there...

    E-learning and Certification

Winthrop or Manchester by the Sea?

I haven't been shore diving in Manchester BTS since the late 70's (I took a 30 year hiatus from scuba, resuming in 2009), but remember some pleasant dives in the area. Currently, I frequently dive the wreck site of the USF New Hampshire off of MBTS from Fred Calhoun's boat the Easy Diver which...

    replacement mouthpiece

The only way I know of is to buy another Atomic SV1 snorkel for about $56. It looks like there are actually several sources of generic snorkel mouthpieces (Genesis makes one), but not the unique side-mount swivel gizmo that Atomic uses. An alternative is to buy two less expensive snorkels for...
