    My back surgery...

As I've gotten older I've somehow developed much more sympathy for the afflicted.: "There, but for the grace of God, go I."

    My back surgery...

Ha Ha - You might not know much about horses or horse people. Allow me to educate you. Horses are beautiful, powerful, intelligent, fun-loving, and loyal. Everything that humans, too often, are not. With us, being called a horse would be the highest compliment imaginable.

    My back surgery...

It may have been longer. She's twenty something and very healthy and athletic. Sprained her foot/ankle rock climbing. She favored it for a while, limping. Then the hip started hurting. I'm pretty sure it's temporary. We often see this phenomenon with horses, where one injury causes stress...

    My back surgery...

We have a friend who sprained her ankle, so she walked funny for several days, and that put stress on her hip, so now she has a bad hip. Prolly best* to use the walker... *Disclaimer: I have no medical training and have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about ...

    My back surgery...

Pro Tip: HD's have nice comfy patio furniture displays where a guy can sit, and even put his feet up, and watch the people go by while he tries to remember the stuff he came there to get. No store employee will pester you by asking if they can help, because they're all busy flirting with each...

    Weighting for Neutral Buoyancy

I carry about 5 pounds more lead than I need, because: I don't ever want to be underweighted, which is a PITA. When another diver needs more weight, I've got them covered. I might want to lie or kneel on the sand while I watch critters swim around, or take pictures. I can easily add air in the...

Can I dive without an octo?

Strongly agree. I bought a spare 2nd stage (hose and regulator), I take it on trips, and I've used it several times when I had problems with my main or octo.

Ascending to a lost boat - what should you do?

I would just point out that "swimming to shore" is not without its own hazards: Searchers may not be able to find you, and some of the gnarliest diving injuries I've seen involved waves, rocks, coral, reef critters, and inexperienced divers.

35 lb Wing for Warm Water Diving

For me, in cold water, the limiting factor was the buoyancy of the rig by itself (without me and my 7-mil wetsuit in it). With 22 lbs of lead and a 6-lb backplate and a full tank, it needed a 40-lb wing. With warm water, I think a 30# wing would be plenty.

    Backplate and Wing

Mine have flaps that fold over the weights and are secured with velcro strips. It takes very little time to pull up the flaps and remove the weights.

    Backplate and Wing

I use XS Scuba weight pockets mounted on the waist belt, back near the backplate. Each one can hold up to 5# weights. With a 6# SS plate and AL 80 tank I usually need 3-5 lbs per side, depending.

Safety Risk for Children on dive boats

The question is, in reality, about what business model a dive op is using. If the dive op wants to cater to kids, and is competent and experienced and set up to do so, then it should work just fine. If not, it won't. We operate a horse riding school in San Diego, and there are lots of parents...

    TSandM -- Her Greatest Posts

Why do we love someone? It's hard to describe: I guess it's because they truly seem to care. In every post, Lynn seemed to care about others, and sharing was her way of showing that. Her posts are just as good to read today as they were many years ago.

Getting back to diving after a break, what to do?

Sounds like all the bases are covered gear-wise. After a break in diving, my challenge is always to remember the procedures. The dive plan, the buddy check, how to put the gear together, how to use the computer, etc. etc. You will be getting all that in your refresher course, I would assume...

    The bends in Cozumel

Caveat emptor. I have learned through great misfortune that it is up to each diver to satisfy themselves that the dive op they are dealing with is reputable and has the needed safety equipment and training, including O2.

    The bends in Cozumel

As I understand it, the man and his wife noted that she had symptoms and immediately called for help, which was just minutes away. That was the right thing to do, and Cozumel has excellent treatment facilities very close by. With the huge number of divers there, this scenario is probably not...

Correlating DCS symptoms with dive profile

It is said that the first symptom of DCS is denial. From personal experience, I can tell you that I would immediately treat any DCS symptom as requiring 100% oxygen and immediate medical attention, as a few hours delay in treatment can paralyze or kill you. With DCS, I can think of no upside...

    TSandM -- Her Greatest Posts

My wife Katy and I just returned from 5 days of diving, and I was reminded once again of Lynne and her attention to good pre-dive procedures. On many days we shared the dive boat with new people, and invariably they screwed up in one way or another. One very muscular fellow, who had about a...
