    Dive Rite "Streamlines Openwater Configuration"

Thanks for all the input guys! I've recently been trying to streamline my kit, and wanted to move away from the "standard" open water setup. I use the long hose setup with my doubles and tech equipment, but tbh I really didn't want to deal with the long hose on my singles setup, especially...

    Dive Rite "Streamlines Openwater Configuration"

So the other day I was perusing the inter webs when I came across this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OrTXi-hjv4 Intrigued by the setup, I started trying to find out a bit more information on it, but was sorely disappointed with what was available online. So to get down to the point...

How to piss off a Divemaster?

Sorry, my wording was less than ideal, and conveys a condescending attitude which isn't intended. That what I get for writing this at 3:00am :( In general, so long as you dive safely and don't endanger yourself and other, you're a pleasure to have on board! I realize there are many, many, MANY...

How to piss off a Divemaster?

Sorry, actually did mean while working as a certified assistant for courses. On one of the OW courses I recently DMed we had a diver who, when they got to the bottom of the lake on their first checkout dive, literally just sat there staring at his buddy. The buddy, in turn, starred back at him...

How to piss off a Divemaster?

I'm am an easy going guy, and unless what you are doing will directly result in death or injury to you or another diver, it's rather difficult to piss me off. However, there are certain things which will internally annoy me, but not necessarily make me treat you like a problem child. -100 dive...

    Has anybody ever done this?

I love doing this! On shallow dives i'll typically swim about for 20 minutes, find a spot I link, and then sit there until I have to head back to the great air supply in the sky. Most things spot noticing the bubbles fairly quickly, and soon you're observing all sorts of interesting fish and...

    "Dive Medic" ???

There are also a number of DMT certifications offered by commercial diving school. Most (if not all) require a EMT license as a minimum pre-rec. It is actually something I've considered, but I simply do not have the time to do the two separate courses :(

Assessing DCI risk factors and adjusting dive plans

As a fairly active college student who has no known heart conditions and has good cardio conditioning, I don't particularly fall into the hugest risk group for DCS. However, I am a stickler for hydration in my daily life, and diving is no exception. I have a liter per dive rule which helps...

Breathing rate, air integrated computers and DCI correlation

I believe the logic behind reducing the NDL under heavy workload has to do with the increased cardiovascular rate, and hence quicker circulation of blood and blood soluble gasses, rather than the increased respiratory rate. I'd have a hard time believing shallow or improper breathing alone...

Miami vs. Ft. Lauderdale for Key Largo?

Ft Lauderdale airport is less of an annoyance, and far easier to navigate than Miami. IF all other factors were equal (Price, flight times, car rental pricing, etc.) I'd personally choose Ft. Lauderdale JUST to avoid Miami. Personally, I'd rather spend the extra 20min driving than waiting in an...

    Starter Dive Computer

Another vote for the Hollis DG03. Just picked one up with the bungee mount from Divegearexpress.com to use as a second bottom timer for tech. Not the most intuitive computer to set, but once you get the hang of it it's all the computer you'll ever need at an amazing price! Also, it has user...

Dang! Balance that's leaking. Anyone else?

No problem with mine (as far as I know)

    How expensive is tech?

I don't like this thread. I just finished my advanced nitrox and decompression diver course and have currently been calculating out my gear cost while simultaneously convincing my brain it's all still affordable to a college student...

What ppO2 do you use and why?

Actually, PPO2 is measured in Bar or Ata, so that is correct. This all comes from Dalton's law, which basically states that the total pressure of a gas is equal to the pressures exerted by its individual components. So, at the surface, the total pressure of ambient breathing air is 1 bar/ata...

What ppO2 do you use and why?

1.6 for all of my recreational diving, and this is because you never even get close to the CNS or OTU limits in that type of diving. Of course, you do need to plan to the situation. If you're doing 5 dives a day on a live aboard for over a week, then dropping down to 1.4 would be a good idea...

Orbicular Batfish..........kill it or leave in peace.

Actually, interestingly enough a recent paper compared the biomass of a lionfish population in the Bahamas with that of a native population in the Indian Ocean. They found that while P. volitans had more biomass than their proxy on the other system (P. miles in this case) the total lionfish...

Orbicular Batfish..........kill it or leave in peace.

I think we need to clear up a terminology problem. By definition, a non-native species is an organism that has been introduced to a area is was previously thought to not inhabit. An invasive species, for US legal purposes and most biological applications, is a non-native species which directly...

Tips to doing that motionless hover

I don't know about a dry suit, but doubles certainly helps. They're more balanced, and as such keep the diver from pitching from one side or the other.

Orbicular Batfish..........kill it or leave in peace.

As far as I know, no studies have look at its impact on the reef. I'll take a look later today and see if I can find anything, but I'd say let it chill with its buds for now.
