I've FINALLY HAD IT with my LDS

Wow... I paid $550 for full classroom/pool/quarry/ocean, including 2 specialties, in Brooklyn. Definitely sounds like a ripoff, but I guess it's the whole eLearning. I am not sure how PADI runs their programs, maybe PADI shops are required to accept eLearning, but don't take it out on a...

Diving in the new Millennium ???

Kind of WAY off topic, but what's wrong with Air2? Not trying to start a debate, just a quick answer would be good for my own general knowledge. LDS I am with has all BCs with Air2 in them.

    Defog formula

Worked for me. In fact, when I bought it, it came with a small sticker, saying I should remove protective coating with a special solution, available for low low price of whatever. LDS told me that toothpaste works fine. They told me to use a finger, not a brush, until it squeeks. After that...

    Assessments

Not sure what agency certifies you, but with SSI, I had to submit a fill in "test" for each chapter of a OW manual, plus a 50 question multiple choice. Instructor told my group that if we don't get 100%, we get to carry his gear heh. Also had evaluation in pool, confined water (quarry) and...

Diving in the new Millennium ???

Embrace the new!! (If you want to) While I am VERY new to diving (13 dives logged), I am pretty sure you can still dive using skills learned before. Just need to find a buddy who will be comfortable enough. If jumping in a water with plain air in a tank, dressed all black, and without a...

Why did you become a diver?

Never really cared about diving. It was on my "Neat to try one day, when I am bored out of my mind" list, but I really couldn't care less. In Feb 09, researching next vacation destination with my gf, I saw that there are few diveshops. I did not want to spend a lot of money, but I saw that...

    Equalizing

I would see a doctor. Could be a earwax buildup, or other things that I am mile away from being qualified to say.

still using a snorkel? or does it stay in the car

Didnt hurt me yet. But then again, I didn't do much other than quarry and open water dives. So until I find a reason NOT to bring it, it's with me.

    Aeris Dive Computer

My Atmos 2 does the same thing. Ascending 2-3 feet to follow my buddy, pretty slowly, and that thing is already in yellow. I think if I try to ascend slow enough to keep it in green, I'll run out of air... My instructor was laughing at it during my OW checkouts. Ascend speed meter (not only...

    new/prospective diver NJ/NY

Another vote for Kings County Divers. Very friendly folks, know their stuff, feel students' capabilities. Just got certified through them and will go on for specialties. Their equipment prices, however, are not the cheapest.

    SSI and turning off air?

Did EBA from 30' during my checkout dives. Instructor turned off my air (was turned off during inhale), so I was nervous that I won't reach surface soon enough. Did exhale on the way up, and got to surface easy enough. What I did not know was that my instructor was riding up with me and turned...

    Contents of Specialty boxes/packs

My Nitrox kit was just a book, tables, some printed stuff that LDS threw in, and SSI Dive sticker for the car. No DVD. $30

50ft dive after 1hr of instruction?

a PADI shop in Aruba took me on my Discover Scuba. After 30 minute DVD, signing release forms, and 20 minute gear explanation, we were taken to about 5 feet. Did a quick set of exercises. (Recover regulator, equalize, clear mask) and off we go. My girlfriend could not get the clear mask exercise...

    interesting story--diving and flying (airplanes)

When I went on my very first dive, (discover scuba diving in Aruba), 1st thing they've asked after I've filled out health questionnaire, if I am flying out any time soon. My flight was few days after the dive and even before showing me the video, I was explained why flying after diving is a...

    Gaining experience with Dive tours

I am actually on the same boat as you are. I've done 3 dives in Aruba, part of Discover Scuba Dive. My girlfriend did not feel comfortable and went to shore. My friends who like the idea of scuba diving, do not have the cash to go through certifications and equipment rental. I will be watching...
