    Questions RE: Nikon D90 underwater...

I've had good luck so far with my D90 in the Ikelite housing and Ikelite strobes. It is pretty bulky, but it works. I think TTL is excellent to have for macro work. I have a few macro lenses, and I really like the 85mm that came out last year. I think Ikelite has a strobe now that also has a...

I bought a Nikon D90. What lense do y'all recommend?

I use a D90 with the Tokina 10-17 for wide angle and usually the Nikon 85mm macro lens for macro and both are great. I have the Ikelite housing and strobes, and it's bulky, but works fine for me. You mentioned video, and I think macro video would be almost impossible with the D90, but probably...

    Canon SD700IS to which DSLR??

Also, just with regard to other options suggested upthread, for better or worse the only way to get a DSLR is to get a DSLR. From what I can tell, Micro 4/3 cameras are reasonably close in many respects (relatively large sensors, interchangeable lenses, etc.). Even the best P&S cameras are...

    Canon SD700IS to which DSLR??

I would say go for a high-end consumer DSLR, either Nikon or Canon because they have the best lens choices (which is ultimately the most important part of a DSLR setup). I use a D90 and love it, apparently the d7000 is even better, but you may have to wait a while for a housing since it just...

Bad dive spot in the carribean

Diving was less than mediocre Oh, come on. The diving is AT LEAST mediocre. Seriously, though, it's not as exciting as Saba, but there are lots of good sites. Lots of tiny sailboat man made reefs with virtually no coral. This sounds like the site called Le Pont. It was never the best site...

    D300s flash question

I didn't notice anyone mentioning this upthread, but you may want to check your EV setting. When I am photographing something like an insect on a white wall, I will make it positive because otherwise the subject is underexposed because most of the frame is white. If I forget to change it back...

    Nikkor 85mm F3.5G DX Micro

Also, along the lines of what Chuck said, and you probably already know this, but on land all these lenses are 1:1 magnification, so when you are as close as you can focus, the subject is the same size on the camera sensor as it is in real life. Underwater, this would be magnified equally for...

    Nikkor 85mm F3.5G DX Micro

I have it, and I use it on a D90. I also have 35mm and 60mm macro lenses. I love the 85mm, and if I'm shooting macro, that's usually what I'm using. I would recommend it over the 60mm. I haven't used a 105, so I can't really compare to that, but based on using the 85 (which is the equivalent of...

New UW camera setup: D90 +......?

I have never owned the 105mm macro, but I do use the 85mm 3.5 and it is pretty awesome. I think with the crop sensor it is about the equivalent of 125mm. It's also about half the price of the 105, I think.

    Newbie w/ camera questions :D

I would also suggest housing the DSLR, if you think you will really get into underwater photography. Think about the DSLR and P&S you have already and how they are topside. They will be basically the same underwater. The image quality and control you have with the DSLR will be just as much...

Thinking about upgrading - need advice

I just made a similar comment in a different thread, but you might want to give more thought to housing your D300. It's expensive and bulky once you add the flashes and stuff, but it's also really awesome to be able to shoot underwater with a DSLR. I didn't have one when I started shooting...

    Is my P&S hopeless?

Point and shoot with strobes and wide angle wet lens is pretty fun, but if you really want to get great photos your best option would be to house your DSLR, get a couple good strobes and the appropriate lenses for what you want to do (wide angle or macro). This will be better quality than any...

Saint Martin Grand Case Check Dive?

Grand Case Bay is pretty much all sand and seagrass. There are no reefs you can realistically reach from the shore. As mentioned above, there are moorings with morays and arrow crabs, etc. There are also stingrays and sometimes a turtle here or there, but not too much. The most interesting spot...

Relative Newbie Looking for Shallow, Low Key, but awesome Caribbean divesites!

Saint Martin might be a good place for you. There are a number of nice sites that are also shallow. Although it is not off the beaten path, the French side of the island is much less developed than the Dutch side. I live in Grand Case, which is a small town on the French side that is low-key...

    Octopus Diving on St Martin

To get from the Pelican to Octopus in Grand Case, you may have some traffic through Simpson Bay/Cole Bay and Marigot, although the distance is not that far. You can drive either the main road (i.e., via Cole Bay), which is shorter, or around the lagoon (past the Airport/Cupecoy/Sandy Ground)...

    Identify BVI Fish

I think it might be a juvenile jack. When they're really small, they hang around buoys...and divers. But it's hard to tell from this angle.

Leaving for St Maarten May 1 - Looking for dive op recommendations

Jersey, I agree that Docc's 30 minutes is more of a hypothetical, but if you don't have to drive between Philipsburg and Marigot (which also includes both bridges), you can drive the rest of the way around the island in less than 30 consistently. Frostfire, you do have to drive through Cole...

Leaving for St Maarten May 1 - Looking for dive op recommendations

From there you would go counterclockwise around the island to get to Grand Case where Octopus is (i.e., up the east side past Orient Bay). If you go that way there isn't any traffic. The places where you hit traffic on the island are Philipsburg, Simpson Bay and Marigot and you wouldn't have to...

Leaving for St Maarten May 1 - Looking for dive op recommendations

Also recommending Octopus Diving. Sally, one of the owners is a very good UW photographer. As mentioned above they are a more personal operation, they take out six divers max per boat. They also go to lots of different spots on both sides of the island, including some places they have found that...
