El Nino usually reduces the Hammerheads, and yes Ambon is a bit of a cesspool. Twilight Zone which is the pier in Laha is a rich environment of discarded diaper etc but also a critter rich environment.
Some other added pluses to the crossing is spotting whales while your cruising and Manuk...
You might post on the Indonesia forum and get more replys.
I've done a crossing trip from Ambon to Sorong, in November. Fall is the season for schooling hammerheads so consider that. I loved the trip I did, the hammers were cool, and the reef diving is excellent, throw in watching thousands and...
Post in the Indonesia forum. Bali has epic diving but Sanur doesnt have the best acess to great diving. You can day trip out to Lembongan and Penida but its a 45 minute trip out.
As you look into Palau here's some of my thoughts.
LOB vs Landbased... I did landbased with Sams, as a single diver I was shuffled around from group to group and guide to guide, untill I requested a group/guide that I liked diving with. A friend uses Palau Dive Adventures and likes them alot...
Most definitely Indonesia over Palau. Palau has more sharks than Indo but I found it was lacking in soft coral and the macro life that goes with it, it has some spectacular hard coral and nice fish life and is super sharky and has Manta's too, but I like soft coral habitat and all the color and...
.As @Centrals says going to Komodo eats up precious dive time. It's world class diving but you don't have enough time.
As you say your looking for corals, fish, and nudis. In your case I would pick Padang Bai which will save you time spent on transferring to Tulamben. Padang Bai gives you some...
Typically the Hammerheads are seen in the September-November timeframe and not the March-April months. There is lots of good diving in the Banda Sea but I certainly wouldnt have enjoyed my trip as much without the Hammerheads. You also have to check the diiference in routes, some go from Ambon...
@rayaa3 you mention liking the muck dives at night. If you haven't been Lembeh is fantastic for muck diving. Tulamben also has great muck, along with Anilao which of course is in the Philippines not Indonesia.
Buceo does have a house reef. It is a macro site but it can vary in quality, sometimes it is a critter powerhousewith loads of macro subjects, other times it's not so good and varies. I saw my first Halemeda Ghost Pipe pair there on the housereef after many trips all over Indonesia and the...
Yes the DM's working for them as locals will be locals, many of them will have started as boat or resort crew and have become DM's. The anglo foreigners that work for them sometimes work as resort staff ( ie working answering emails and booking staff) or become instructors and then work for them...
One of the best DM programs I've seen is thru Sucba Junkies Komodo.
Great program and great diving. Their program is really professional and they do a really good job. There is alot of their hires that have gone thru their program but they are instructors, they have mostly local's as DM`s and...
As yuo can see in the video the diver with the close call is only paying attention to the action on the baitbox. I've seen plenty of that and had to warn more than a few people a Tiger is sneaking up behind them. I always end up with a rash on my neck from my wetsuit rubbing on it from turning...
Given your short time why not just stick with Malapascua since a transfer will eat up precious dive time? A transfer is going to eat up a half day at least. Moalboal would be the easiest and quickest if you really want to dive another area.
Good food in the PI can be a challenge to find sometimes!
Overall I prefer areas where I can select my restaurant so I can find the best food. There is one resort where we used to go with great food, so good we could stay for 2 weeks and rarely venture off site to eat. Their menu had dishes...
If you look at dive pricing structures at most the resorts it get weird.
You pay for the boat and guide separately, so if your a single diver or a couple you may end up paying for the whole boat yourselves. The pricing at Buceo is all included, you just pay per dive, that is what originally...
