    Disadvantages of DIR ?

It's harder to find an acceptable dive buddy once you've been made aware of the distinct difference in disciplines that make it great!

Hyperventilation/ Short Breathes in cold water

This last weekend while dive in fresh water with a temp below the thermo-clime of ~48 degrees F with a 7mm wet suit on, I experienced un controlled rapid breathing. I was pretty cold just before the incedent, and then removed my mask. When the cold water hit my face, I started uncontrolable...

Anyone using the 18# Oxycheq Wing?

Excellent w/o downwelling. Had a chance to use this wing on our vaction last week. Loved it! I did carry a sausage just in case. Realistically, I've got to practise the drill of filling it in a timely manner, while maintaining a constant bouyancy in good conditions. Greg

Does a BC filled to capacity maintanin a constent amount of lift at different depth's

Your original post covers the conclusion that I have come to. I haven't gone as far as taking apart an OPV and measuring the force required to collapse the spring and distributing that over the surface area of the valve face. I think some where back in this thread there was a surprising low #...

    Weights - DIR way

I has a Trim II. The adjusters would not hold their adjustment and there is not a fore-aft adjustment like on the original DUI Weight & Trim belt that is still available. If you buy on of these, go for the original. Greg

    Blue water, White death

In the movie, before they finally find the Great Whites, they have coverage of three types of sharks feeding on a whale carcuss. One of the species are Oceanic White Tips, which they wind up swimming outside the dive cages with. I've never seen longer footage of the Oceanic White Tips. I think...

Hesitation with Diving and purchasing first set of gear in NE

I'm a new diver as of last year. I purchased equipment that seemed to be pretty good and was well recommended by the shop I was dealing with. Since then I've replaced about half of it. It is hard to develope a perspective if your dealing w/ only one shop. ScubaBoard has made me aware of allot of...

    I'm interested in the answer

I started diving last year. I found that the PADI programs allowed me to get tanks filled and provided the basics in textbook form. When it came to skill develoopement, I was sorely lacking. I eventually started dealing with a shop that has drunken from the GUE punch bowl. So far I have taken...

    Center of gravity?

Recently took a bouyancy class put on by a GUE DIR-F instructor candidate. It appeared that the class closely parralled the intro to DIR-F, covering buoyancy and trim & propulsion. To start with, remembering the concept of staying in "proper position" helps to establish a constant/ baseline of...

Does a BC filled to capacity maintanin a constent amount of lift at different depth's

Thanks for the links for the pictures Fred, I'll be on the lookout for those. 0.4 to 1.5 psig in the bag? Hmmm, there is something more for me to learn here. I'm sure it winds up being a very simple problem, it just isn't coming together for me yet. I guess that is part of what makes this...

Does a BC filled to capacity maintanin a constent amount of lift at different depth's

This thread has been running in parellel with this one under /Equipment/BC's and Weight systems titled: Anyone using the 18# Oxycheq Wing? Doc Intrepid sent me a message bringing to light the risk of down-dwelling currents, which I have in part posted here...

Anyone using the 18# Oxycheq Wing?

Doc Intrepid was nice enough to share his knowledge/experience of the following phenomenom with me: Certain geologic formations, generally involving two or more islands in relative proximity, can lead to a condition known as a downwelling. While there are other downwellings as well, these...
