    Thanksgiving 2022 weekend Casino Point

I’m making a SoCal visit to hit Casino Point on Saturday. It’s to pay tribute to Doctor Bill, and to get my younger brother and his kids to do the discovery scuba with either CDS or Scubaluv. Can’t wait. It’s been too long since I dove at Casino Point. Gotta check out the new Jacques...

Cali divers take things for granted, methinks

You don't know what a pain it is to go diving when you're outside of SoCal. Here you can hop on any boat every weekend, maybe even Wednesday. Or schlepp your gears down to the various beaches. It's like pulling teeth trying to find sweet diving spots in the East Coast. I had zero dives when...

Santa Cruz Island 21st June 2015 - so nice after a long absence

Fellow SoCal Divers, What's with moving to Houston and suffered a herniated disc (C6-C7), I was land bound for six months. The last dive I did was in December 2014. I was on the Explorer heading towards Anacapa but the wind blew us out so the boat went to Santa Cruz instead. I was most...

Gonna have to say goodbye to SoCal diving comes early 2015

I just got the word that I'll be transferred to Houston first of February 2015 and Maryland by summer 2015. Good bye magical kelp forests, hello Gulf Coast and East Coast diving. Gonna have to visit either Horizon or JMJ for 3mm suits.

Even Santa Barbara Island is hotter than heck

Warmest depth temp was 64-F and coldest was at 61-F. Surface temp is close to 70-F. There were but a couple fronds of giant kelps and everything were just barren. Very sad. I want my cold water back.

I want to give away my free Hollywood Divers Nitrox fill card

I have a Hollywood Divers free 5-Nitrox fills card since the SCUBA Show this summer that I haven't been able to use. I love visiting Hal and Bill, swapping dive stories, but the work schedule just not working out. So the card is sitting in my wallet unused. If somebody were to want it, PM me...

First Dive of 2014 and First Dive at Valiant wreck

2014 already seemed to start out well for me. Despite gettin' into the water a bit late in January (damn work), it was a good start. First dive of the year and first time at the Valiant wreck, who can complain? Friday and Saturday divers got to enjoy the nice sunshine, but came Sunday and it...

Casino Point 7th December 2013 and a convert

I took my intern over to Casino Point and had him do a Discover SCUBA session with Catalina Divers Supply. Viz was good inside the kelp line, OK outside of the kelp line. My computer indicated 57-F at depth. I did find a bit of thermocline left of the stair and soaked in its relative warmth...

Would somebody help me check something on the Sundiver Charter website?

Dive Boat Sundiver The Sundiver Charter just changed their boat schedule websites. When I click on all I see is a blank page. Would somebody be kind enough to check the website out for me? I just want to make sure that it's my computer that can't see their boat schedule sites.

16th August 2013 - My best outing at Casino Point yet and it ain't even cold season

Went to Casino Point with a new dive buddy on Friday. I generally prefer not to go to the dive park during the summer time because of too many people, but I have yet to make it over for the year 2013 and Friday was the only day my new buddy can do it. So we schlepp our gears...dare I say, my...

A sci-fi/thriller book that features SoCal diving/water scene

Below: Ryan Lockwood: 9780786032877: Amazon.com: Books Is it the Great American Novel? No. Is it entertaining? Yes. The diving depictions are pretty accurate for the most part. After all it's a thriller/suspense/action adventure movie so a bit of license had to be taken for that...

Might as well call Catalina's Arrow Point "Abalone Point"

Not only Arrow Point is such a cool dive site but I have yet to see such an abundance of large abalones in SoCal, not even out at San Miguel. It's awewsome!!!

I love it when I get to see a few "first finds" - Talcott Shoal

Went out on the Peace boat to front side of San Miguel. The dive sites were outside of Wyckoff and Oil Spring. One dive at Wyckoff and two dives at Oil Spring. Conditions were definitely rough. Fogged in all day and 4-ft swells at times. Water was both green and filled with salps & jellyfish for...

    Little Farnsworth was sweeeettttt!!!!!

Sunday 14th July 2013 was my first visit to Little Farnsworth. Man, that joint didn't disappoint. Viz was blah on the way down but when you hit the pinnacles, horizontal viz cleared up to easily 40-ft. And yes, there were some nice thermoclines too. One at about 20-ft (typical summer water...

Black Seabass at Little Geiger, Catalina!!!

I went out with two friends on the Sundiver Express. There were supposed to be nine divers total but two cancelled at the last moment and Captain Ray was gracious enough to not cancel the trip because of too light of a load. The three dive spots were: Africa, Little Geiger and Lion's Head...

How come the SS1 and the yellow octos have small mouthpieces?

Those small mouthpieces are nearly worthless. I am having to refurbish my SS1s and the other regulator octos with the stock mouthpiece that comes on the regular second stage. I'm curious but why equip the octos; inline or second stage, with the small mouthpieces that don't want to stay in your...

    Need help identify a nudie

I saw a nudie at the backside of Santa Cruz around Bowen Point that I didn't recognize, and it didn't show up on the Slug Junkie chart either. This sucker was tiny, maybe 1/4-inch at most. Of course I had to leave my nudie finder (aka magnifying glass) on the boat. But I digress. This nudie...
