Splitting-the-Pot: How to Divvy your Drysuit Budget

My vote would be to go with the best new drysuit you could afford and worry about the other stuff later. Manufacturers sometimes offer promos that include undergarments. Check with your awesome LDS to see if/when these are happening. BARE and DUI come to mind. Usually once a year, so I'd...

Video debriefs - What's your excuse

Learning how to dive takes a weekend. Learning how to dive well does indeed take some effort on your part. Best excuse: Diver - "I have to dive knees down because it's the best way to teach properly." GUE Instructor - "Why can I teach in proper trim?"...

Going to drink the kool-aid - GUE style!

That's sooooo weird! I'M doing a Fundies with Guy, Mark, and Alan in Victoria in early October TOOOO! I wonder if it's the same one...:shocked2: (PM if you're in town and want to do some practice or fun dives. There's a big group willing and ready to help tweak us all up to snuff.) VI

Nitrox "sign-out" sheet for tank fills at LDS

My LDS uses a log all the time for nitrox. Trimix requires no log. Also certain regulars/staff don't seem to be required to log their mixes. It is very interesting to read of some of the legal cases where dive shops have been found legally liable after an accident partially due to lack of...

    Rules

Rule 1: Dive with anyone who wants to improve. Rule 6: Look good, dive good.* * Apparently many, if not all, GUE and UTD instructors I've met fail to recognize the validity of Rule 6 and instead focus on odd-ball concepts like buoyancy, trim, and propulsion.

    DIY electric snorkel set up?

Air has to be pretty clean before I'll breathe it, generally. So if it has not been filtered and has been pushed through a shop air compressor, or something else that adds oil, water, crud, etc to the air, I am not game for that. If I was a certified diver and needed "surface supplied" air...

    Thoughts on in-water recompression

For those who do not know, a typical Table 6 treatment can be up to 6 hours long. At a SAC of .5 cuft/min one would need about 360 cu/ft of O2 at 30 feet. Depending on the severity depths may start at 60 feet on pure O2 thus requiring yet more gas. Obviously an injured diver could likely consume...

    Downsizing dry gloves...

I don't have a link handy, but try searching local industrial cleaners wholesalers and fishing supply stores. The most common use for the "blue gloves" is fish cleaning/handling on deck. Also other gloves will work in the rings, too, like marigolds, or lighterweight showa gloves (the orange ones.)

    din conversion

On my Aqualung Titan I used a "fair bit" more force than hoses, and it still came loose a few times - it would wiggle around as I was fitting it to the tank. So I used more force. It's been fine for 30 dives or so. On the Apeks DS4 I applied more force than for the hoses (but it didn't seem to...

Knowing when to adjust the tanks position in the bands

Have you tried all the tricks that you can read about for reaching your valves? Using your head to help push the arm, stretching your suit on on the surface before donning the rig? Etc etc. One of my GUE primer instructors said that moving the bands on the tanks is almost always not required...

Sooke This Weekend - Where to get tanks? Where to dive?

If you want to dive out of Sooke, then Wilson's is by far your closest shop (if Scuba Stu is booked up.) If you're not diving in Sooke, basically all the other shops are as accessible to the diving, if not more so, than Wilson's. I'd call ahead and book tanks (and other gear?), no matter...

When to choose a lower capacity tank

As has been mentioned HP 130's are heavier to man handle around, at the dive shop and the site, than HP 100's. The extra gas may or may not be needed. When doubled up (if you ever go there) they are very heavy and offer LOTS of gas. Doubled 100's (or even alu 80's) offer enough gas for most tech...

    Why the hating on Tech?

One day of chilling at my LDS and you can meet world-class UTD, GUE, or TDI tech instructors and you can meet world-class recently DIR-F'd douchebags. Both types represent some personalities in tech diving, but the douchebag "tech divers" are the most visible and most vocal. They never seem to...

    Saanich Inlet Conditions

I live next to the resort and dive those waters all the time. I'd say the best overall chance for a great time is sometime in the warm summer months. Vis is historically better in the winter months, but nothing firm that you could ever bet on. Don't pick a really hot time where the surface...

    Spg

One reason to unclip to read your SPG that I've found is that it allows me to keep my head up, improving my situational awareness. After practice - and not that much of it, really - it really becomes quite facile. And that's in cold water with dry gloves. Add a deco bottle in the mix (which I...

Complacency can hit ANYBODY; or why you should NEVER hurry when diving

"Complacency" and "Violation of established rules and procedures." Two small and significant breaks in the chain of errors, or steps down in to the incident pit. Thanks for the reminder. For those who have yet to understand it, these small "seemingly insignificant" lapses are what can start...
