Question Newbie: Worried about water temperature

As others have noted temperature tolerance varies a lot by person. I’ve been on a dive where my partner got cold and we had to call it. I was wearing a wetsuit, him a swim shirt and trunks. Was that the only factor? Oh absolutely not. We had also overshot the boat (that part was my fault!) and...

Owning cylinders - is it worth it?

See, this is why I loved this forum. I just log back in after a significant amount of time & learn something new. I didn’t realize that there was such a price difference between tanks in the US & Canada. OP: I own one AL80, one AL40. I’m still planning on getting another 80 for a doubles setup...

NewB BP/W Question - This wing for a single tank?

Yikes! I run a single AL80 on a 26lb wing. The only way I could see it being dangerous is if you were using the extra lift to compensate for other equipment making you way too negative. In which case you would want to reconsider the whole setup. I'd really say you should go for a smaller...

    Looking Forward to Fundies

Have fun, I need to get on the track to Fundies again. I've been out of the water for way too long.

Basic skills in a hogarthian rig

Well I guess since my harness is DSS I'm good then :D. But seriously, I'd love to hear your reasoning behind that comment. I have no problems with my weight belt & harness combination. Added w/ Edit: To add a few remarks ... The reason I ask is because the issue of ditch-able versus...

Have you had a DM give you trouble about it before?

    Christmas Tree divers

I'd say it's about the # of things brought on a dive that aren't needed to complete it safely. Possibly, as LeadTurnSD put it (emphasis added), follow that advice & you won't be a "Christmas Tree Diver".

    "S" Drills

For a visual see the link below. The video shows essentially what the donating diver does during an air share. You'll note how even though the diver doesn't have a can light or pocket he still simulates running the long hose back around one. YouTube - Safety Drill (S-Drill) - Scuba An...

holding my breath while taking a photo

Well, no, but that wasn't exactly my point. True I wonder when this started to be considered a "cardinal rule". There's clearly a bunch of people who don't consider it to be a set in stone law of diving. Lets leave dive count out of this shall we, after all it's really a discussion...

holding my breath while taking a photo

Would you like to share some of your "medical references, agency directives, DAN reports, etc" you've mentioned that you have this or that, but provided nothing quoted or sourced.:shakehead: Is it really so shocking that someone could hold their breath slightly while taking a photo and be...

    Why north at 180 degrees?

Yes. :D You can mount a compass to a scooter, or at least the ones I've seen. Been on a scooter once, can't wait to dive them more.

    Any cheap IDC programs?

If you factor in opportunity costs then I wouldn't call any IDC "cheap". I'd say it's better to spend the money on a good program, and make up the costs through teaching, then to attend a "cheap" IDC with a sub-par program. Your future students will appreciate it, I'm sure. Just my .02.

    Emergency situations training

As others have said regularly practicing skills can help. However, if another diver runs OOA and wants your air I wouldn't expect a calm signal from them, instead there's a good chance they'll just take the second stage you're breathing from. If you're prepared for each dive then you'll...

Diving for Sir Francis Drake's grave

That's not very long on the geological time scale. :D :hm: Now if only I had a fleet of boats, divers, and ROV's to work with.

Dive Boat "pros"~ what is their role?

CBD? Sorry, but I'm not sure what that's supposed to stand for. It might surprise you that I've rarely had an issue with a DM or crew member, the only real annoyance I've had was the time my air got shut off, that's about it. The majority of the time there's no reason for me not to tip, and...

Dive Boat "pros"~ what is their role?

Pride or not, exactly how should a DM help a diver with his/her buoyancy underwater? I'm curious as to what exactly you mean by this. Do you mean keeping track of buoyancy, as in monitoring a diver's depth? I like your "rules" for the most part, except for the one below. I have had a...
