    18 lbs Vs. 26 lbs??????

There's a 'Sticky' at the top of this forum that will ultimately allow you to download an Excel spreadsheet where you can work through all this stuff. There are 6 points in time that you need to evaluate before you can say that the wing buoyancy is adequate. For the cold water diver, the...

Organizing my purchase of a BPW system

You are quite correct, DSS has a Kydex backplate rather than aluminum. Both of our DSS rigs use the SS plate - cold water being what it is. Richard

Organizing my purchase of a BPW system

Your 'bits and pieces' prices aren't sufficiently low to make it worth the hassle. If you go to www.deepseasupply.com you can get a complete 'top-of-the-line' BP/W with either the stainless or aluminum backplate. For cold water and a 7mm wetsuit, 30# of lift is adequate. It could be somewhat...

Anyone have a supplier for 'generic' VIS stickers ?

I don't get the sense that Nitrox fills are all that common at this shop. I remember looking at the log book last summer and the most frequent entries were mine. I usually get 4 or 6 fills at a time so that might account for the log entries. Things could have changed. Richard

    New Tank Questions

Good luck with that! I can't even keep the proper mix in the main tanks. I keep my tanks filled (primarily 36%) and, from time to time, have to dump the tanks and get something else, usually just air. The pony bottle is your absolute last chance to get to the surface alive. Assuming...

Anyone have a supplier for 'generic' VIS stickers ?

I was just over at Dolphin Scuba, Stockton, and confirmed with Mike that they only do partial pressure blending at that shop. I still don't know anything about the Sacramento store. Richard

Cost Info for Back Plate & Wing Kits

Interesting! I guess the idea is to allow, say, the left strap to slide up when trying to doff the rig. I think I'm going to try one. Right now I have the ProFit harness on the rig but that is easily changed. Richard

Cost Info for Back Plate & Wing Kits

One hint from a previous post: call Tobin at Deep Sea Supply and get a rig on order. But, while you are at it, get all of the information you will need to get it adjusted properly. One of the great advantages to buying from Tobin is all of the customer service. There are web sites that have...

    PADI Dive Center concern

It could be that the 5 Star organization just hasn't updated their web site now that they are no longer registered with PADI. I don't think they are trying to deceive, I think they are essentially out of business. Work the problem from the other direction. Find out where people go to dive...

    help picking equipment

I would strongly recommend that you NOT buy all your equipment ahead of time. The thing is, your LDS may not carry the best brands, they may not have the best prices on the stuff and, if you buy from another shop or via the Internet, you WILL cause friction with the shop. They don't make...

one more time, LP tank without + rating

According to the chart I linked above, it holds 78 cf at +10%. Close enough to 80 cf for me! Richard

one more time, LP tank without + rating

Let's assume the tank has sufficient capacity, with or without the '+' rating and get that out of the way. If the tank is too small, it's too small. What you are looking for, if you are diving in cold water, is a tank that is light and as negative as possible. That way you can reduce the...

    PADI Rescue requirements

Perhaps they just want to know before they go. I did... I took NAUI OW I, OW II, Advanced OW and Rescue with only 2 rec dives between AOW and Rescue. I didn't have anything else to do while I worked through First Aid and CPR so I went rec diving. Not everyone agrees with me (in fact, few...

I got a great deal on some tanks...or did I?

Exactly! If you want to dive with a double hose regulator and not overpressure it, the LP tanks are perfect. If you want to use a retro harness then the 72 is the perfect tank (correct diameter). Make sure it has a J-valve with a HP port for the SPG and you're good to go! A horse collar...

I got a great deal on some tanks...or did I?

Sounds like a great deal to me! You can probably take them to your LDS and they can tumble them, perform the viz and get them hydro's. Yes, I know you have a tumbler but there are people you can pay to manhandle cylinders. With luck, the hydro shop will know the REE number for the tanks and...

    Mk 16 vs Mk 17

For some time I have been interested in the Mk17/G250V reg set. My LDS has a really nice price on the Mk16/G250V but I don't recall reading anything here on SB re: the Mk16 So, for a cold water diver, how does the Mk16 compare? Or, perhaps more to the point, what is the Mk16 good at? Richard

What to do when an instructor is out of line?

Well, I'm not an instructor so my opinion doesn't count. However, I was taught that the lost buddy procedure was to surface and I'm sticking with that approach until there is a really good reason for doing something else. In a perfect world, the rest of the group would have noticed that you...

Anyone have a supplier for 'generic' VIS stickers ?

I haven't watched the fill process but they (Stockton) have a pure O2 whip and several 'Safe Air' whips. I'm almost 100% certain it is partial pressure blending. Sometimes the mix is off a bit and I wouldn't expect that with banked or continuous blended fills. Next time I'm over there, I'll...

Anyone have a supplier for 'generic' VIS stickers ?

I think the number is right. I could be wrong, of course. I do know that the cost of air/Nitrox is totally insignificant compared to the cost of gasoline to get anywhere to dive. The viz around here used to be $7 and then it was raised to $10 some time last fall. I haven't had a tank done...
