FINALLY... back in the water / ATX50 review

If you need worldwide service go with SP MK16/550. If you want more reg for the money, go with DST/ATX. You are getting a swivel and adjustable second stg which the SP model doesn't have. Also, tech info for this regulator is much easier to obtain.

Anti inflammatory? Of course, thanks for that, JR.

    SeaQuest QD

I like the looks of the "balance" and its back inflate concept, but here are some upbeat remarks on the QD. http://www.scubaboard.com/t4917/s.html Beuchat makes a comparable line in the "masterlift". They are well made. I've noted before that these jacket BC's sometimes need an crotchstrap.

HP vs. LP / High Pressure versus Low Pressure steel tanks

Spare air? Is that DIR's newest, oldest bogeyman? LOL. Go ahead and dive those 8 inch dia LP monsters, but don't call yourselves "streamlined" anymore. I like the image of a petite diver with twin 102's. What does that look like from above?...a submersible vehicle with no apparent means of...

HP vs. LP / High Pressure versus Low Pressure steel tanks

Who needs 120 cu ft? I don't know, maybe your buddy who is out of air? Also comes in handy if you need to decompress, or jump back in to unsnag the anchor. No need to tap a fresh tank. Here's a clue, you can get an HP120 which weighs seven pounds less than your LP102.

    Any information about "Oyster Bacteria"

Our BS expert also thinks necrotizing fasciitis is a hoax. Heh, heh, heh. Yes, strep A also spreads faster if clotting is inhibited and it secretes enzymes for this purpose. I can only imagine what warfarin would do.

HP vs. LP / High Pressure versus Low Pressure steel tanks

Before you jump to conclusions you should know that the Aqua Aire HP 3500 is available in a LONG, 120 cu ft version. At 3000 psi it holds 102 cu ft, with "overfill" capacity up the wazoo. Oops, there go all your calcs and Pug's objections.

HP vs. LP / High Pressure versus Low Pressure steel tanks

    I believe that SP's 72 is a Faber rated 72 cf @ 3000+ and is 6.75 X 20, -3.7 neg. It appears that PST makes a similar tank; 72 cf @ 3300, 6.9 X 20, -6.0 neg. http://www.huronscuba.com/gear/cylinders.htm

HP vs. LP / High Pressure versus Low Pressure steel tanks

Tom, welcome back. I agree, from an engineers point of view the HP is superb. Some divers prefer the longer, heavier LP tanks for their own reasons, and PST offers a commensurate product line. The only gripe I have is that high pressure, high capacity HP tanks are only offered in 7.25 inch...

    Any information about "Oyster Bacteria"

I've never heard of a bacterial infection spreading so rapidly, except strep. Perhaps you remember a few years ago, the stories about the rapid acting flesh eater streptococcus were a sensation. I've seen limbs endangered by Staph Aureus, but only after two weeks from initial symptoms.

    sinus congestion

Netdoc, that's interesting, a prescription decongestant that's effective. I guess I'll have to take back what I said 6 mos ago. Have you tried Entex? That stuff is worthless, IMO.

What’s the symptoms for a perforated ear?

Sea water does enter the middle ear under set circumstances. Your sources are wrong. BTW, do your sources still tell you that Vit E is of no benefit to humans, or that women who bear children must stay in bed for days, or that exercise is dangerous and causes enlarged heart? They did once. Do...

    Cleaning the First Stage

Juan, if you are seeing "white stuff", perhaps you have already disassembled the regulator? Anyway, you might need to do so. Soak the parts in a solution of 50/50 white vinegar and water. Rinse, replace the O rings, including the tiny ring inside the balance chamber or piston stem guide. Check...

    Aluminium tank problems

Larry, are you in the US? The old aluminum tanks marketed in the US may not have been stamped with the alloy type so this info won't do you any good. Instead, the ALCAN, Kidde and other brands may have the designation "SP 6498". This special permit number flags the now suspect 6351 alloy...

What’s the symptoms for a perforated ear?

I've seen blood get into the rigid sinus cavity but not the middle ear. However, I think it is safe to bet that some ENT who diagnoses "otitis", or ear infection, a thousand times a year has seen this, or diagnosed it. I suspect that if it does happen to divers, the sinuses are a source, not...

    Be careful

Many years ago, my friend was struck by a sailboat. They don't make much noise. I usually halt at 10', stop breathing, and listen very intently. However, a boat moving at idle speed is not easy to hear. If it can be heard, the direction is difficult to ascertain. I always look up as a matter of...

Reasons for aluminum b/p with single aluminum tank?

OK, don't overinflate. An unconscious diver might have a problem with that though. I love these DIR divers. If EE were selling regulators with exhaust tubes routed through the ears some divers here would defend it. I use a back inflate but, being a stroke, I understand its limitations.

What’s the symptoms for a perforated ear?

There was water in the ear and the drum was intact? I've warned about this before. litt, ensure that you have no water in your mask, if water is present blow it out and shave your moustache. Do not tilt your head up when attempting to clear. It could be argued that the incident was due to...

    Sea Lice/ Thimble Jellies

In late Aug-Sep we are visited by a similar problem. The offender looks like a strand of miniature, purple pearls. I think they are called "hydroids". On impact they cause minor stings followed by many small red bumps which itch like chigger bites and persist for a week.
