Mares Mobby ICE Fit 4.0 Drysuit

I had problems with the drysuit boots (which would require ankle weights for real buoyancy control) and had the suit modified to remove the boots, and substitute trilam socks instead. I LOVE the combo - more posts will be coming

Does Nitrox make you feel better? (split from Nitrox on OW course)

the intricacies of placebo, and placebo-controlled double-blind crossover studies with a priori determined p < .05 significance notwithstanding, I feel better with after nitrox. Just my opinion.

Diving knife - Weapon or not??

Awww... come on everybody. Any basic trainee knows that the only knife really designed as a weapon is a bayonet. Remember such touching shouts as "Sergeant: the red, red blood makes the grass grow green!" and "what is the spirit of the bayonet? to KILL, to KILL, and TO KILL WITHOUT MERCY". If...

    Ear infections

I have had 3 eardrum ruptures. The first was dur to falling off water skis and landing on my right ear - got maybe 6 ounces of lake water out of my ear - exquisite pain and total vertigo - if I hadn't been wearing a PFD, I'd probably have drowned - had no idea which way was up. Second was while...

Deep Vein Thrombosis Status Post DCS type I

I've become less and less impressed with d-dimer for very much of anything. It just has such a poor positive predictive value. Of course, my dealings with it have been in the context of pit viper envenomations, and all it does is shake the treatment team up. If I had my way (which I don't, in...

    Too old for tech?

My wuss of a doc (who doesn't want to be stuck running the poison control center all by himself) insisted on a cardiac stress test before he would sign my SCUBA medical release. The cardiologist got me up to 174 beats per minute with no sign of abnormality - disgustedly showed me the door "you...

A letter to the open water diving community from the NACD

From the perspective of a long-time spelunker (1968-2003) and recent (8/2008) OW diver, it's hard to overestimate the hazards associated with cave diving. The most compelling evidence I can come up with is, that if you're going into a cave that is going to involve a dive; the diver(s) do the dry...

    Right TM rupture question

I got open water certified on August 15. A couple of weeks later I celebrated by not paying good attention to clearing, and producing a pinhole rupture in my right TM. Stopped my dive buddy - did a "look at this" sign, and proceeded to blow bobbles out out my right ear. He was sort of...

    Problem Equalizing?

Nasonex is ok for chronic use, but remember that from a standing start, it takes 2 weeks of continuous (that is, as directed) use before the effects maximize. If you're gonna use topical steroids, that's perfectly fine, but they are no replacement for decongestants if you haven't used them for...
