    butterfly house 8/21

I agree. Butterfly house is my favorite norcal site. I've never see anything as blanketed with life. Jason

    How do you prevent sunburns?

I have taken to using some neutragena aerosol 100spf that claims all right things for 1) preserving my skin and 2) preserving my latex wrist seals. That and a hat.

    MK3 vs MK2 Buoyancy

Well -- I dove the MK2 last summer in SoCal with no problems. If I was cold, I'd put on a patagonia capalene base-layer and if it was really warm -- I'd only wear the baselayer. Average temps in the 60s, probably 62-68 with a day or so that may have hit 70. I might drop 2-4lbs diving with just...

    washing undergarments

I use light detergent on everything I wash -- but I wash my MK2 garments after most dives. I hang them out to dry. I havent noticed a change in insulating characteristics at all.

    Question about hood

I used to dive Catalina frequently, with no hood. My hood was on a vest and I was too lazy to want all that neoprene; determined I didn't need it. First time I dove Monterey I spent my SI shopping for a hood. Now that I have one, I won't dive without it. Makes a huge difference!

    When to buy tanks?

I bought my tanks because they suited my style of diving and gave me a consistency in weighting and equipment that I didn't get with rental tanks. I bought a Steel 78 over 10 years ago. Its great and let me take some weight out of my pockets. I didn't have the issue of different AL80s coming at...

What did you buy that you regret?

Air2. 2pc 7mm Farmer John and Jacket -- I immediately hated diving it so much I went dry. Crappy fins, mask and snorkle in a package at Sport Chalet to start my cert class. Extra SPG because I didn't trust my air integrated computer, waste. Suunto Cobra is great.

Need Info about the Santa Monica/ LA area

For a great LDS -- Reef Seekers, if they are still around. Ken was incredibly helpful and actually pieced back together gear with dealers that had been mis-configured/cannibalized by another shop (at no cost and relatively no effort on my part.) The kind of service that wins life-long loyalty...

    DSS versus Apeks wings

I bought an Apeks BP/W with the surelock pockets. It is what my LDS sells and I figured that it was time to support them. I've gotten a few other things used/online recently and the extra 20% or so is something they are welcome to. Also, they're putting in a lot of time sizing it to me and...

Henderson Gold Core OR Pinnacle w/Merlino

I've been diving the Henderson gold core for 10+ years in California. It goes on fine wet or dry. The gold core side also dries out pretty completely over a 45-60m SI. Over night the suit is bone dry. I really won't buy anything else for diving wet and wish they made something for surfing.

What do you use as your primary dive light?

I've been diving with a Princeton Tec Shockwave LED. 400 lumens, super reliable, pretty gentle on batteries thus far and its been super durable. I tend not to need it much as I'm usually with camera and strobes and the focus light tends to act as my primary dive light. For $125 or so, its a steal.

    G10 Housings

Thats a bold and silly statement. Light is light. Sensors are sensors. The CCD/CMOS in the G10 or the one in the G9 (where I can speak from experience) is the same quality and could even be the same sensor used in a dSLR. Its all about the optics of the lens, the sensor used to record it and how...

    Suunto Mosquito Vs Gekko

I am thrilled with my Mosquito. I have been diving it for 2-3 years as a backup to my Cobra Air-Integrated. I started 10-12 years ago with a Cochran Commander+ Nitrox as my first computer. It was great but rather bulky and the computer interface and software was really bunk compared to the...

    Patima housings

I have the Patima G9 housing. Its a tank. I love that I get 100% functionality of the camera and everything appears to work really well. I have been waiting a while for some replacement o-rings (but I order far enough in advance, I'm sure I'm fine.) I have had some issues understanding the...

    G9 and wide angle capability

I shoot a Patima G9 with ULCS tray and dual Inon Z-240s. I just spoke with the guys at Reef and they assured me the best option was a UWL-100 type 1 and the dome port. I asked a bunch of times if the type-2 wasn't the right lens but they assured me the type 1 will fit and be slightly closer to...

    Housing for G9

It all depends on what you think you need and when. The life of an average Digital Camera isn't too great these days. All the ups, outs, add-ons and extras will not help your photography. They will present you with more options and flexibility in what exposures you do take. Above water I am a...

Question about the Canon G9 and strobe..

Hi-- I just spent today setting up my WP-DC21 to take an fiber optic cable to connect it to my Inon Z240. It was fairly simple. If you call Reef they'll send you most everything you need. Sadly they always seem to send the wrong sizes and I have to cut, sand and shape stuff a bit. Today wasn't...

    Replacement O-Ring for Canon WP-DC21 (G9)

Hello all! Today I decided to set up my Canon G9 with its Canon housing, my ULCS tray and Inon Z240 strobe. Upon opening the box and looking at the housing I felt the o-ring was suspect. I took it off and examined it at length -- I believe it is fine but I'd much prefer to get a...
