Can recommend Papua Paradise as well as Papua Explorer. The latter is closer to the most famous Dampier Strait's location. The former is more chill and a bit more luxurious.
Fair point. It may be that Aussies travel to PNG more often, but nobody else does. The logistics are just too difficult.
I'd put PNG on par with or better than R4, but that's based on the three areas I've dived. Obviously, can't comment on other areas. It's big country.
I've been to...
I've done three trips to PNG, and the diving has always equaled or bettered the best I've experienced in Indonesia. Still, over 20 years, I've been to PNG 3 times and Indonesia roughly 18 times because arranging a trip to PNG is so much harder. PNG has nothing like the tourist/travel/dive...
Though I would post a quick report for anyone in the same position--flying into Singapore and then flying Scoot to MDC on a separate ticket. We arrived around 1:15 a.m. and made our way to immigration expecting to pick up our bags and head to Terminal 1 to use Scoot's kiosk check-in and bag...
I've done this every other time I've connected through Singapore. But the need to recheck bags means I have to clear immigration. Used to be the transit desks would handle this for you, but I understand the service is no longer available. But I'm thinking this could still work if I use...
Flying LAX - SIN on Singapore then SIN - MDC on Scoot. Apparently no way to check bags through to Manado, so will need to collect bags then go to Terminal 1 and recheck. Our layover is 8.5 hours and Scoot's check-in counters open only 2.5 hours before the flight. But it seems as though...
I've stayed at Papua Explorers once and Papua Paradise twice as well as other resorts without aircon. Generally speaking, I've found I sleep comfortably during the dry months--for RA, northern hemisphere summer--but less so during the wet months. To be clear, I've never found sleeping...
Need a phone number for any of the options. But no phone number is showing in settings. Perhaps a data only card since I purchased for an iPad. I'm guessing there's some way I could make it work, but it will probably take less time to just purchase a new card at the Manado airport.
For anyone who is interested, I dug a little further. Verizon will let you transfer your number to eSIM without an additional charge. Most Verizon plans also give a 1 day "Travel Pass" per month of service. Each Travel Pass gets 24 hours of service, unlimited calls and SMS and 0.5 GB of high...
Can't use two physical SIMs at once, I could switch my US number to an eSIM and use a physical Telkomsel SIM, but I'm pretty sure I'd get stuck with an activation charge to switch to an eSIM.
Unfortunately, I switched to Verizon last year. They give you some limited free data overseas, but not...
Has anyone used an eSIM in Indonesia? Seems like this could be a convenient way to keep your phone number active while avoiding international roaming data charges.

We're booked on a late October Banda Sea trip departing from Ambon. I'd like to get in a few days diving there before our liveaboard. Checked with Spice Island Divers but they're booked up for that time. We went with Dive Into Ambon on one of our other trips, but I understand they've shut...
I agree, but in all honesty, the satellite connection was not that bad. I downloaded and replied to emails once a day and the rest of the time forgot about work. The good was I had none of the dread I feel when reconnecting and 1500 emails download at once. I wouldn't choose to bring one...
The last time I was in R4--land-based and liveaboard-- I was dealing with a client who absolutely did not want me to be out of touch. I rented a satellite hotspot from satellitephonestore.com. It was pricey but worked well both at Papua Paradise and at sea. Of course, being that connected...
Raja in July/August is fantastic for the north with clear blue water. If you're on a LOB, you can get all the way to Wayag and Kawe. I've never been able to make it that far north in peak season. It's also far less crowded. Only downside is you're shut out of the south. If you want to stay...
