    Diving in Dominican Republic

Not too many people traveling to Dominican republic realize that not all the waters are the Caribbean sea. Punta Cana on the east and Puerto Plata on the north are all surrounded by the Atlantic ocean, therefore not as calm as the Caribbean sea in Bayahibe area on the south.

Bayahibe - Dominican Republic - Mini Report

Thanks for the report. Yes it is true some divers do not realize that scuba diving in Bayahibe is pretty good. Of course some like to see BIG stuff, this is not an area for that, even though I saw a hammerhead couple time, our clients saw humpback whales few times too. Of course no guarantee...

    Puerto Plata Dive Ops ?

I believe the villas are on Cofresi beach in Puerto Plata. I am not sure if or how is the diving in the area, but scuba diving in Sosua (about 20 minute drive from there) is not bad, I dove there for couple years. If you look at my above post, Merlin Divers are a great dive op. The Elite diving...

My tank nearly slid off my BCD yesterday. What would you do?

Don't dive solo with one tank and without a proper training - you are asking for trouble. As said above you should have learned how to deal with it in your OWD course AND check your equipment before you go to the water!!!!

Are Rescue Skills really needed by the average diver.... ?

I've rescued few divers during the time I've been diving, and you know it's not fun. I have also seen many "certified" divers that had no idea how to do basic skills. It's too sad that is more about money than about teaching people the correct way. About a month ago I trained a rescue diver and...

    Diving in Bayahibe

It's been a little while since the previous post pholife, but thanks for the nice words. David is not with us anymore, he left Bayahibe couple months ago and is planning to move to a next scuba diving destination wherever that might be. He was with us for more than 2 years and you are right, he...

    Punta Cana in May

If you are coming for a scuba diving vacation, Punta Cana is not the best area. If you enjoy resorts and nice beaches, Punta Cana is a place to go. Most divers will tell you that diving around Bayahibe is the best, there are few AI resorts in the area too

Diving in Bayahibe Dominic Republic with Scuba Fun

Dominican Republic is not a place to see big stuff, even though I did see a hammerhead shark twice (during the 5 year period I've been here), nurse sharks and reef sharks. But it seams they disappeared since the last storm we had last year. Now for the past few years we see occasionally humpback...

DR in April / Punta Cana

RIU is either on the north coast close to Puerto Plata (Atlantic coast), so it's impossible to come here for diving, it's too far, we are on the south (Caribbean side), the other RIU is in Punta Cana (east coast, also Atlantic), about an hour drive from here. We arrange private taxi for our...

DR in April / Punta Cana

nhaone, Gujustud, where in DR are you guys will be? Gujustud we are getting booked all year around the same because we do only private diving, we don't mix strangers together unless they are single divers. We do also trips for divers/ non divers combination. Because of the private diving our...

    Dive Ops Around Cabrera, DR

Sosua is OK, of course it's not the Caribbean coast as we have here. I lived in Sosua area for two years and dove there all the time. Sometimes is just a bit tricky to get on / off the boat, specially for the beginners, when the ocean is wavy. Try Merlin divers in Sosua, a good dive shop that...

    Dive Ops Around Cabrera, DR

I am not sure how good that would be for discovery scuba, it is the Atlantic side. It,s not too far from Nagua and the water around Nagua is always very rough. You can try to set something up in Sosua, but that would be about an hour drive from Cabrera.

CO testing report - ScubaFun, Bayahibe DR - all zeros!

All the small dive operators in Bayahibe (and I guess all over the world) have to take good care of all their equipment and the air too. They don't have the luxury of big resorts supplying them with thousand of clients, so they have to have everything in perfect shape to keep the clients coming...

    Diving in Sosua, Dominican Republic

There is a dive shop called Merlin divers, I was diving with them for couple years when I lived in Cabarete (east of Sosua). Very friendly service, lots of fun. Here is their website Sosua Scuba diving - The Merlin Dive Center dominican republic offers a complete range of services.

puerto plata (playa dorada) dive ops

Rick, Dressel is known as on of the safest dive ops at the resorts in this country. So your son should be OK with them. In case he wants to try something more private, you can contact Merlin Divers in Sosua, about 20 minutes from Puerto Plata and they might be able to arrange transportation too.

Turks and Caicos, Whales in Feb/March ?

We can see the humpback whales here in Dominican Republic now too between January 15 and March 15. The area around Samana (the north coast) is their mating place so nobody is allowed to dive there. But for the past couple years we got them here on the south around Bayahibe as well. Our clients...

Best area of the Dominican Republic (DR) for diving?

The bus price is correct BUT is not as simple. To get from Punta Can airport you have to take a taxi to the bus stop (around 10 USD), from there take a bus to Higuey and then La Romana - this is the 10 USD price (unless they have a new bus route direct from Punta Cana to La Romana on the new...
