Rental equipment in Cuba, DIN or yoke?

My experience has been that they use primarily DIN. I always travel with a DIN reg and a yoke adapter. Have Fun Gary

Do you always have emergency O2 available?

Mike where are the chambers in Cuba? As a regular diver there I alwys wondered if they had any. I have not seen O2 there. As to O2 we always have it on boat dives and many shore dives. My club has a system as well as a couple of my dive buddies. I usualy have a 40 of O2 handy. Gary

    Sanilac Shores Lake Huron Charters?

There really is no shore diving near Port Sanilac, it is just a beach with shallow water out quite a ways. You can go 25 miles south to Port Huron and do shore dives in the river there. Current is strong in places so I would strongly suggest you dive with a local. Good dive shop there, Dive...

    going to Varadero

Like olyman says there is one mainshop in the town of Varadero called Barracuda and a couple of dive shacks at resorts that are the same operation. The weather should be OK by March, the winds have been about 6 mph from the NE the last few days. I leave on Tuesday for the Holguin area. In...

    Cuba trip suggestions

Tamas, I have dove in Cuba twice, both times I was staying at Varadero. Once was in December and the NE winds did not allow diving there. That is typical of the north shore from about early November to early March. If you wish to go then the south shore is a better bet for diving. I have...

    Pioneer vs. Travel Wings

Take a look at the Oxycheq if possible. In fact visually inspect several of them and see which one appeals to you. I have been diving a Pioneer 36 for 4 years and am very happy with the way it dives however it is made of fairly light material and puctures easily. Have fun Gary

    Steel vs Alum. tanks

If you are doing dives past 100 ft you really should have doubles. If you are doing dives as deep as you say and are not using doubles and a responsible buddy or team I suggest you listen to Soggy's advice and get equiped properly. You can double up AL80's and get your self a SS backplate...

Who has been the provider on a real OOA?

About 6 years ago there were a group of 6 of us doing a river drift when the current decided to not let us back into shore. I looked over to a lady instructor immediately to my right and saw the proverbial "eyes as big as saucers" and knew she was out of air. We were all getting low. She...

If you have stayed at the Grand share some pointers with me please.

We stayed just down the beach at Iberostar in March. There are several very good dive ops that will pick you up at your pier since many of the dive sites are down that way. I used Aldora and was very pleased. They have larger tanks, 100 and 120 HP steels which makes for very long dives. There...

    Identification of Zeagle/ Apeks Regulator

You have what is normally referred to as a TX50 reg set. The first stage is a DST which stands for dry sealed turrent, it swivels. The second stage is the TX50 which has both adjustments on it as opposed to the TX40 which only has the dive/pre dive switch. Very nice regs. Gary

    Air2 or Octo

I stronggly support what Mark has just said. A 7ft hose and a top quality second stage on a necklace is a much superior system. As Mark says once you establish the way you route the long hose it is second nature and the one on your neck is the easiest to find when needed. I was just...

    OFWF Gathering - Kingston August 28/29 2004

Hi all, have not been on the board much this summer, been too busy working but will stop by Saturday and say hi. Our local club from Sarnia has the Great White chartered for the weekend so I will be in town. Diving Gal your list of wrecks looks an awful lot like mine. Guess you will be...

    Aqualung Legend with Octo

Me too, I will agree with Boogie, for the few dollars that you save, why on earth would anyone buy a really crappy second stage which is what every octo I have ever tried is. For something like $25-50 more you can get the same model as your primary. If you want it can even be yellow but I...

I am now AOW ... woooohooooo

Congrats on your AOW. Since we are talking about first night dives how about bending the thread a little and brag about our first time. This discussion reminded me that quite often the first time is the most exciting. When I had about 8 dives here in Ontario I went to Australia and...

Apeks TX50 or Poseidon Jetstream (Odin)

I would suggest going with the Apeks, the first stage is likely a DST. If so it will swivel. Just for your info you can buy a DST with a ATX50 secondary for $325 USD on line in the US and the ATX40 secondary will cost about $160 so I would try to get the price down. You can order for the UK...

Mares MR 22 Abyss, Aqualung Legend LX or Apeks ATX200?

Aqualung bought Apeks which is located in the UK. Shortly after that they finally came out with their first "Class A" reg the Legend. I am not in the business but I understand that the legend is based on the Apex. Incidently the Zeagle regs are also copies or at least based on and very...

    Plastic Netting?

If you get netting, get the finer version with only about 1/4" holes. It works well to protect your tank and does not bunch up etc. like the larger looser stuff. You will have to adjust your bands if you go to a bare tank but no big deal. Just trim the top just below the curve of eh tank...

    Inapropriate Dry Suit

Hi Axeman if you work something out and need directions or a buddy let me know, I live here. Actually the viz has been lousy lately so you may not be to broken hearted if you can't dive. Gary

Apeks ATX200 VS. Mares Titanium Abyss

Actaully I would advise going with the Yoke adapter. I have several Apeks Regs all with DIN connections. However, if I go south I just take my yoke adapter along and if DIN tanks are not available I just screw on the adapter and I am all set. If I am in Coz for instance there are HP steel...

    ATX100 or ATX50?

The Zeagle flathead is like the Apex 100 but not the same, unless you get an older one. For years Zeagle imported Apex regs and sold them under the Zeagle name but about 2 years ago they stopped and got someone else/ or themselves to build the regs. I know nothing about them except they seem...
