Original article - part 2
Analysis
Dive accidents are usually difficult to analyze, because the facts of what occurred often die with the victim. In this case, much is known about the events leading up to Jennifer’s death. And as is often the case, several significant factors contributed to the...
Here's the original article - part 1
In Memory of Jennifer
by Bob Bailey and Julie Simonds
On a beautiful Saturday morning in July 2007, 25-year old Jennifer Coyne boarded a charter boat for a dive in the San Juan Islands. Their destination that day was a dive site off the west coast of Lummi...
It probably got messed up when they upgraded the site. I've been trying to find it and can't so maybe Bob can repost it in the new articles section and fix the link on his original post.
It's been 8 years since Jennifer's accident - we just came back from a trip to dive in memory of Jennifer. She is always in my thoughts when I am diving!
Please stay safe this summer! Refresh your skills, take some new training, speak up if you see something that's not safe, keep diving and get...
Thanks everyone. I'll drive up there once we move so I can talk to Rob. The shop is about an hour from where we'll be living :( I'm disappointed that there isn't more local diving done but that crater looks pretty cool so I'm excited to check it out.
My husband and I are moving to Denver next month. I've talked to a few dive shops but haven't found anyone that does sidemount diving or training. My husband wasn't able to finish his training before we will be moving so he'd like to complete the OW portion locally once we move. Any one know of...
My Nemo Air always reads about 300 PSI more than my Oceanic VT3 - I always thought the VT3 was just conservative but a friend ran out of air on her dive when her Nemo Air showed she still had 300 PSI so I guess it's the Nemo with the inaccurate reading.
As I am packing my gear tonight for our first shop trip to the quarry, I was thinking about Jennifer and her experiences as I will be working with OW students as a DiveMaster this weekend. I just passed all of my certification requirements so this is the first official trip for me. It has been a...
I'm not sure what the difference is but West Bay Express is a one way trip. It starts at Cobalt Coast and heads towards Lighthouse - you go for as long as the air supply of your group lasts. Ours was about 70 minutes. The boat picks you up and brings you back to Cobalt. Maybe the guided starts...
I can't find it on their site anymore :( We had already taken the PADI DPV course so we didn't have to do anything special. It's too bad they aren't doing it anymore. It was one of the coolest things I've done diving.
Another vote for Cobalt Coast - I much prefer it to Sunset House. The food was really good, the shore diving was decent but mostly it was the atmosphere. The hotel and Dive Tech employees are awesome! If they still do it, the West Bay Express DPV trip is A LOT of fun. Because you aren't on a...
Exactly - my daughter died 5 years ago. It takes a long time to get the information and in our case, we filed a lawsuit so there was no talking about it until everything was settled. Bob Bailey and I wrote an article about my daughter's accident and I was able to get a modified version of it in...
