This has nothing to do with moving anywhere.

Recreational Pony Bottles, completely unnecessary? Why or why not?

I never said anything of the sort. It was asked why a manifold is ever a plus. I answered that. I was not pushing the use of a manifold, nor telling you when to surface, or how to dive.

    Weight and Trim help

The barrel roll really sounds like your tank is making you back heavy, and you are probably using a jacket style instead of back inflate, so you have some added buoyancy in front. Adding a couple more pounds in front should help counteract that. Sometimes getting trim can mean over weighting a...

Recreational Pony Bottles, completely unnecessary? Why or why not?

The manifold allows for full use of all gas, even if you have a 1st stage failure. While you can feather a tank that is having issues, it is not the same. It does add more complexity and another potential point of failure, but that is slight. This is the prime reason the consensus is manifold...

    Age, Health, Certification and Trim

If you have to permanently stay less than 30', you will be severely limited. If that is forever, I am not sure I would even bother with certification, but others may disagree. I would probably just do a few discover dives.

Recreational Pony Bottles, completely unnecessary? Why or why not?

That is their choice. Most will be just following a guide anyways.

Just switched to drysuit & air consumption has gone up

A drysuit will normally be a bit more consumption, but it should be minor. They are not as streamlined (although custom fit can help that alot), and you are using a miniscule amount of air to fill them. If you are constantly adding, then you have other issues. 40% sounds like the leak and...

    HOG BP/W Question

I got the tbcs as my first bc, and it has been great so far. I went with the ss backplate because I almost exclusively dive cold water. Unless you are only diving where you have to fly, I would personally stay away from the soft plate. It will just mean having to add way more weight other places.

Everybody I know that does that still has an octo.

Recreational Pony Bottles, completely unnecessary? Why or why not?

980psi if you need specifics. 31 minutes, but not sure why that matters, as I was never had less than 5 min of ndl time remaining. Are you just going to rewrite the book on what constitutes a "tech" dive?

Recreational Pony Bottles, completely unnecessary? Why or why not?

Just because there are bad divers out there does not make a 120' dive a tech dive. I am not a technical diver, but have gone over 100' many times. I never hit ndl and don't go into overhead environments, which is what makes a dive a tech dive. These are all rec dives. My last was a wall dive...

Recreational Pony Bottles, completely unnecessary? Why or why not?

There have been plenty posted in the thread throughout the 37 pages and counting. I don't personally use a pony, I am moving towards sm for redundancy, but that is a different animal all together, and is part of a gas plan, not just for emergencies. I have many buddies that will use a pony on...

Dive boat etiquette and buoyancy check

While I agree with most of this, doing a buoyancy check with a near empty tank is actually a good way. You should be able to sit at 15' deep with an empty tank if you are weighted correctly with little/no air in your bcd.

Recreational Pony Bottles, completely unnecessary? Why or why not?

Pony is for redundancy, and should not be in the plan. It is for emergencies. If you are adding it to your plan, then it is not a pony, it would be a deco or stage bottle.

When is it okay to abandon your dive buddy?

This was about padi, which I am familiar, and what he took, and what we were discussing. He said his ow instructor told him not to do the last 2 chapters of ow and they would be covered in aow, which is absolutely not correct. I understand different agencies have different things, but this was...

When is it okay to abandon your dive buddy?

That is definitely not correct, your instructor was not following standards at all. There are no part of the ow course that is covered in the aow course. The aow course is really only about a sampler course of different specialties.

When is it okay to abandon your dive buddy?

You must have fell through the cracks. I did my padi ow in 2018, and the elearning definitely talked about ndl and tables. We also had to demonstrate to our instructor during the review session how to fill out a dive plan and the corresponding nitrogen levels and ndl time on subsequent dives...

    Trim issue

Is there a reason you want to do a "booda hovering"? Normally that is not a good trim to have, as it would normally mean you are feat heavy. You say you have 4kg, but then say you have 2kg in 2 front pockets, do you mean 2kg in each pocket, or 2kg total? If you want to be able to hover feat...

Recreational Pony Bottles, completely unnecessary? Why or why not?

Agree with all of the points. I have never felt the need for a pony (even though several dm buddies use them on every dive), have always relied on buddies, but have a few things that are making me reconsider some sort of redundancy. My normal buddy is cheap and does not maintain his gear at...

If you could change one thing about dive training...

Those are, for the most part optional. They are not required in most circumstances. Drysuit may be required to rent one, and ice diving is really a technical environment, so that is not part of OW anyways.
