Lessons My sidemount cylinder valve spun itself completely shut during a dive

If you turn it wide open against the stop and the shaft in the valve shrinks from temperature drop it gets really tight, apparently. I never believed it, but I've seen something happen that makes an easy turning valve not turn at the end of a dive. As soon as it comes off the stop it turns...

Lessons My sidemount cylinder valve spun itself completely shut during a dive

Trouble is that the valves were not hard to open and were not hard to shut, after I got them to turn in the off direction.

Lessons My sidemount cylinder valve spun itself completely shut during a dive

It was explained to me that the cooling of the mechanism with the air going through it would shrink the stem and bind it. I suspect that this sometimes happens.

Lessons My sidemount cylinder valve spun itself completely shut during a dive

I've been diving 40 years and was taught the 1/4 turn rule. I did not believe it and have always turned my tanks on all the way. For some reason several times in Mexico we have ended up with tank valves stuck in the open position after a dive. I am trying to remember to turn them back a quarter now.

    What happened to Cozumel?

Twice I have seen divers with lots of certs run out of air almost before we looked at ours. They were just overwhelmed with dives they were not ready for.

    What happened to Cozumel?

Maybe. I have witnessed a few disasters with people who had the cards but didn't have the capability.

    What happened to Cozumel?

Maybe we just had an unfortunate experience but remember, even though you were newbies, they had seen you dive.

    Sure they do!

    What happened to Cozumel?

I suspect that StreetDoctor and I were both victims of the operators wanting to see how these new divers did before they took them someplace challenging. I have seen a few situations where divers with the right cards were dropped into situations their first dive with the dive shop that the...

The Golden Rule v. Dive Deposits

The problem is not the diver losing the deposit if the diver can't dive. The problem is the diver having the deposit tied up when the boat can't take them diving. For locals, probably no problem. For people who live elsewhere it may be a reason not to use that operation.

Lead weight with steel vs Al tanks concerns

Back to "the air in steel tanks has no weight" idea?

    Bag-Drag updates?

When we approached security in the Cancun airport there were people politely standing to one side with signs trying to sell the Visitax.

    What happened to Cozumel?

I didn't complain. Just paid the bill, which was quite a bit more than who we normally dive with. I'm not upset with Aldora. But if our only Cozumel dives were those dives I would believe that Cozumel diving was kind of dead. I know this is not true.

    What happened to Cozumel?

I know that Aldora is a good operation, but we dove with them only one time. The trip was to be a lionfish hunt to the north. Instead they took us to some non-descript site to the south, no hunting, and after a small, poor reef they ran us over the sand. Not much fun and we are unlikely to go...

When can I dive after a 2 implant supported 3 crown bridge?

For what it's worth, I had an extraction and implant done in Cancun and dove a week later. I would have gone sooner but weather was bad. YMMV.

    What happened to Cozumel?

I'd be happy with no cruise ships, but I'd rather not have 50 dive boats in sight from Punta Sur.

    What happened to Cozumel?

Happens that the more people that decide not to go to Cozumel the happier I am.

Why is buoyancy more sensitive in shallow waters?

Your physics is right, but if taking in that breath moves you up slightly in the water that breath, your wetsuit and any air in your BCD expands much more in the shallows than it does when you are deeper. That expansion tends to move you up more, and the process repeats to bad effect.
