I'm a photographer and I recently switched from my old Apollo Biofins (long heavy rubber split fins) to Apeks RK3's.
I love the RK3's for a few key reasons:
they're much shorter and easier to move around a crowded dive boat with
underwater the shorter length makes it easier to move close to...
Reminds me of the protests that were going on when I went to Thailand on a dive trip in 2009. The trip was fine, just had to stay away from certain areas and I recall watching the PM declare a state of emergency as I was in the airport about to fly home.
Hopefully the Indonesian government...
Yikes. I'm aware of the history and that things flare up from time to time between the independence movement and the government, but if things are heading legitimately downhill in West Papua it probably deserves its own thread to keep tabs on the news. Also, get trip insurance.
That looks to be basically an entire kit, with the exception of strobes as you mentioned and also possibly a port extension or two depending on your lens choices. Price seems fine, though not necessarily great for a second-hand housing. The useful big ticket items in there are the housing...
Agreed, there's a different subforum here for liveaboard operators to post deals and advertising. Regardless of whether or not this review is genuine, an operator has no business starting trip report threads in any of the regional subforums. How is there supposed to be discussion if the...
First obviously mask/fins/snorkel and an exposure suit of some sort (depending on where you dive). But after those, in order:
1. Computer.
2. BCD of some sort. Whether it's a jacket style, rear inflate, or a BP/W, a well-fitting BCD that suits your needs is critical. Ideally you want only...
Didn't change anything. I got certified in cold water with a snug 7mm hood and didn't have an issue, and this thing is only 2mm without any sort of seal or tight pressure on your ears so it's a complete non-issue IMO. You shouldn't be concerned, and in any case it's cheap to try.
I got a thin neporene hood on my last trip to Fiji after sunburning my head which worked well. It was probably like 2mm with a velcro chin strap, nothing fancy. Sort of like this:

Sure you can get a 2 pack of random Chinese cells on Amazon for a few dollars less. I'm assuming Kraken does some level of due diligence and QC on their battery supplier, so you're also paying for that. Or you can roll the dice on Amazon.
But we're talking about like $20-30 here, not like...
CLR, and a brush to scrub off as much of the corrosion as you can, then some PB blaster or WD40 and let it soak and hopefully drip down into the threads for 24 hours or so.
You don't really need to be gentle since it's the bolts fused to the aluminum tray, not the acrylic housing. So impact...
Yeah, if the resort takes USD for things like drinks and whatnot, which isn't uncommon, they might be able to help you exchange some. Though they may not have a massive amount of cash on hand.
I'm sure you can find ATM's or exchanges in the airport, either with a higher/no limit, or enough of them to get what you need.
Sometimes dive guides are other nationalities, in which case yeah I imagine they wouldn't care as much. Some resorts/liveaboards are also foreign owned, so deal with...
I also started out on a Ranger BC. Turns out that I didn't do nearly as much cold water diving as warm water, and as many people do I quickly learned about streamlining and backplate/wing setups as I got more experience. They really should do a better job steering OW students towards BP/W...
Interesting concept. Seems sort of like the phone housings where instead of direct tactile control you basically have a computer/app in the housing that you sync with the camera either wirelessly or via a cable. So instead of pressing a mechanical button on the housing which actuates the same...
I'm one of those people who enjoy booking travel and figuring out flights, hotels, and so forth, so I never use a travel agent. I'm going to Raja Ampat in January and it wasn't really very difficult to manage the bookings myself.
Step one I did some light recon on flights from where I am to...
Haven't done it, but I think I watched some videos or found a DIY guide on it a while back. Maybe this one:
https://waterpixels.net/forums/topic/1028-my-ikelite-strobe-battery-rebuild/
This guy sourced all his own components and bought a cheap spot welder. Did it the right way and seems to...
How are you tying it? There's a specific way to tie bolt snaps to things using cave line, and if you do it right they shouldn't come undone even without superglue (I just trim and burn the ends). There's some good videos on Youtube you can check out.
