If you are in an area with leafed trees glance down at the sidewalk and view the multiple partial eclipses projected through the gaps in the leaves.
On the down-kick the fins form a pocket and propel a lot of water. On the up-kick the convex surface slips through the water with little effect. When surface swimming with the FFs I slap the surface a lot on the down-kick. The powerful down-kick and the effortless recovery up-kick is what makes...
I love my ForceFins for warm water SCUBA, but have found them pretty useless for surface swimming. They have no thrust on up-kick.
I wear a size 9 shoe and a FF ML with Comfort Insteps and barefoot.
Because ForceFins retail for a relatively high price, sellers on ebay have a hard time pricing a used pair. My Originals I bought on local Craigslist for around $50. and I later lucked into on auction for $35. plus $15. shipping for a nice pair of Pro's. If you have time and patience you can...
I'd pass. Reasonably priced intact FFs show up on ebay regularly. Hard to tell without a side view if the mounting holes are intact. The tab at the heel is also strange. A FF heel strap kit will cost you $40. if it can be mounted.
At least, ask the seller for a side view to see what's up.

Can you get the reg to lock in flow by taking an abnormally quick/deep breath? careful!
Can you unlock the flow by blocking the mouthpiece and exhaust ports?
When you say leak: freeflow? moderate? just a little?
If you have the diaphragm off, will depressing the lever instigate the leak?
Does...

I'm thinking you dove with Pohnpei Surf Club? Did it seem like a pretty well established operation? Did they run scheduled boats, or just make arrangements when enough people got together? Were you part of a group? How many in your group? How many people were on the boat...
I don't know what a crew member can do with a standard setup that can't be detected and corrected in two minutes.
If crew members left divers to their own devices on the typical boatload we'd probably never get everyone in the water. I've seen people take three minutes just getting their fins on.
