WTB: environmently sealed 1st and 2nd stage

May I suggest the HOG D1 Cold Water. It is cheap, performs well, and breathes well.

How did uploading your dive profile to a PC help improve your diving?

My computer is an XP-10, so I did not have to pay a huge sum for a cable ($10 for an IRDA adapter). I find that it allows me to keep more accurate logs, better track trends in my diving (Dive Log can export to excel, I did some fun stuff with data bases and my profile...) and as bad as it is...

DAN Courses.. Are they worth it

The O2 provider course is almost a must if you are diving on walk-on charters. The course was one night (done through my local club) and was informative. If you have redcross First Aid/CPR/AED the DAN course is basically the same but with a bit of a diving focus, I would not worry about taking...

Battery Chargers - how do you track / organize them?

I use a power bar, I also use for some products "universal" chargers, so I can charge the batteries from many devices at once. A large selling point for me with a piece of electronics is using 5V DC to charge. That allows me to use USB to charge that device (possibly with homemade cables) and...

"Special Discount" On Gear From Dive School

Like the above posters mentioned, don't buy gear until you know you want to dive, and know what you want to dive in. I did not buy my own gear until I had tried a few different set-ups to see what I liked. I found the jacket style BC I was offered was not what I wanted and ended up getting an...

    hog 32# wing?

I too have a HOG 32# wing. I use it with an Apeks BP+Harness and an STA. You could do without the STA if you did not need the weight. It vents very well, as far as I can tell does not taco, and seems very durable. My only complaint would be the inflater hose length, I switched it for the one...

    HOG in magazines

As far as I could tell HOG's (very nice) gear is not directed towards the majority of the magazine readers, but more towards people like us SB'ers. Since HOG is undoubtedly reading this thread: I bought a 32lb wing from you and love it, my next regs will be D1 Cold waters, keep up the good work.

Specific Definitions for Diving Conservatively and Not Pushing the Limits

In terms of NDLs you could plan your dives using a table and stick to those values. Or you could get a computer with either conservative algorithms or adjustable micro-bubble formation settings. It terms of gear being conservative could be carrying a pony on every dive (I consider a pony...

    Most Underrated Dive Destinations

Tobermorry Ontario. I have rarely heard it mentioned on this board. Toby is the best place to wreck dive (at recreational depths) in Ontario, possibly in Canada. Most divers here are warm(er) water divers, so it gets no press.

What would you do if a half ton white shark jumped aboard your boat?

I read about this in the paper this morning (yes, actual newsprint). As it turns out, the people involved are from my area. On topic, get a bigger boat.

What type of rope do you use to attach your equipment?

Well, these work: Gear Keeper Large SCUBA Flashlight/Camera Retractor Kit | eBay There are also spiral "things" that are springy (I really cannot describe them) and retract well. As for rope, a nylon rope would work, as would a the rope you describe. It will look rough, but it should not rot...

Does anyone go to Gulliver's Lake?

I'm going to need to get wet during my upcoming academic terms. I will be at UW from September to April and am up for some diving (Though I have no car....) if anyone else is. Just a note, we need a UW scuba club, or at least an underwater hockey group.

Thinner gloves for cold water diving?

Diving in the great lakes in the winter (0-4C) I have found the best solution is to use three finger mitts. I dive with a pair of 5mm mitts and have never had a problem with cold hands. If you don't practice a bit with them you will feel some dexterity loss, but they are so much warmer.

PADI Deep Diver specialty course worthwhile?

Well, my first deep dive was to 120' in lake Erie on the Boland. It was a great dive. I realized at about 5 minutes that I was not thinking as clearly and decided that it was time to head up a bit. I did the dive with EAN 28. I now have done 10 or so dives to that depth since and have been...

    BC off and on underwater.

I find I have to use ankle weights in 7mm if I am less than 10m. My trim is perfect below that depth, but the suit is a pain above it.

    Coins used as weights?

I did the math on this once. The approximate difference is about 7% for iron. An SG difference of 2 or 3 is not actually that significant when talking about buoyancy.

    BC off and on underwater.

This brings up a good point for me, I dive in a 7mm farmer john with all the weight in my harness pockets. If I became separated I would be screwed... Damn, I need to think about about some non-ditchable weight.

    $90 USB Cable!!!?!

Infrared is excellent. My Subgear XP-10, and my father's Uwatecs Smart Trak 2 both have Irda support. When I get home I just copy over the dives and print them for my log.
