Beach 8 – Far Rockaway – Queens NY - Tomorrow?

I would love to go, but family duties prevent it. I think you might have the tides wrong though. http://tbone.biol.sc.edu/tide/tideshow.cgi?site=East+Rockaway+Inlet&units=f This has been pretty reliable for me and high tide is around 6:30 am tomorrow and 6:45 Sunday. I guess you could...

    Free Dive Planning Software

HLPlanner, I have been using it for a year and have been very pleased with it. I would like dive charts to show a little more and it does not do deep stops, you have to plan them yourself. Great price though http://www.hlplanner.com/

    computers and dive tables

I have to admit, I never look at the tables. I do plan out every dive using HLPlanner. I usually do 2 dives a day and I memorize my plan, including turn around time and turn around pressure. I then dive the computer, but stick to the plan no matter what the computer says. The computer is in...

    Food between dives?

When I go out on the Eagle's Nest, everyone brings stuff for the grill. Captain Howard starts cooking before we all come up. He has 3 grills across the back of the boat. Often he provides venison or wild boar. The food is tremendous. Every one on the boat ( well, everyone whose stomach can...

    Abandoned Diver Prevention

The boat I dive on has a simple effective way off ensuring that they keep track of all divers. All divers names are written on a board. Before you jump in, the crew member assisting you asks your name, no matter how well they know you. Another crew member writes the time you jumped off on the...

For computer users only... safety stops.

I always do a least 2 minutes at half my max depth and 3 minutes at fifteen. Why? My instructor taught me to do it that way and I haven't died yet ;)

    HydroOptix Ultra-Wide View Scuba Mask

I can't recommend the mask enough. I see better underwater than I do on the surface. As others have mentioned, it removes the magnification effect of flat glass masks and everything is actually where your eyes tell you it is. It clears easily and because I have a newer one, I don't have to...

    divers who wear glasses?!

I was at Beneath the Sea and a woman came up to me and said she could tell by my glasses that I could benefit from the HydroOptix mask. Well she was one of the sales people, but she was very nice and I told her I would stop by the booth. I had been diving with contacts, and on my last trip I...

    Moving to NY (Suffern/Monroe area)

Lots of great diving in the area. This is one of my favorite sites http://www.njscuba.net/sites/ I have often spent way to much time there!

    contact lenses

The only time I wear contacts is when I am diving. I used to wear them all the time, but as I got older, my eyes got too dry and I couldn't stand the way they felt. When I am diving, the salt water keeps them moist. Fresh water might be a problem

    Is Nitrox worth it?

I dive Nitrox every dive that permits at least 28%. I dive one al100 and one al80. It is true that my SAC rate will not allow me to stay any longer on Nitrox then on air, but I FEEL safer with the NDL cushion I have on Nitrox. I also have noticed that I am less tired after a day of diving on...

Have you ever sucked the bottom out of your air tank?

On my second dive, I ran out of air. At the time SPG's were not the norm and we dove with J valves. The idea was the valve was up and it would stop sevring air at about 500 psi left in the tank. You would then pull the lever and release the reserve. However, my lever was already down! I...

    First piece of scuba gear

I agree with the thermal protection crowd. You can rent/borrow quality regulators and you will want to try out different bc's to find the one most comfortable for you. Being cold can ruin an otherwise great dive and poorly fitting or worn out thermal protection will not keep you warm. If you...

    Why Diving & Not Tennis?

Being on,in and around the water. The ability to get down where the fish are and to observe the way they live. Diving on wrecks to see the folly of man's arrogance. The buzz of nitrogen. The amazing sounds and sights. The zen of breath control. You don't get these playing tennis

    Nitrox courses

I took the TDI course from very good instructor. He offered to do either the PADI course or the TDI course. I am cheap, with the TDI course I had a very nicely written inexpensive manual while PADI course material was almost 3 times as much.
