Water skill levels of Open Water students & course pace

TS&M put it well. Our shop offers three class lengths- 2 days of Class/pool on one weekend and then OW dives; 3 weeks class on Wed. and pool on Sat. and then OW dives; and a 4 week version. By far, the 2 day is the most subscribed to. Can't say any of us enjoy teaching it, because it is a lot...

    Tips and tricks

On a charter, I typically put the weights in my BC, and take 2 additional one pound weights just in case. Just one less item to take care of and keep track of. On some charters that are tight, we actually assemble our entire rig, then put it on and head to the boat. A lot easier to assemble...

how did you lower your air use

One other thing I found may contribute. I find my SAC, which my computer calculates every 20 seconds, would be high the first few minutes of a dive. Well, usually it was warm outside, 80s or 90s, and I was jumping into 40 to 60 degree water. The change in temp of my cylinder lowered the...

how did you lower your air use

:D Another plus is you can outlast your students. :D Last weekend I severely outlasted several new guides in training, and did they hear about it from their trainers after the dive (they almost ran out of air on a 50 minute, 45 foot deep dive on 3kpsi 80's). Terry

how did you lower your air use

I have asthma, and breathing during certain times of year can be hard. I also have large lungs, verified by all the tests, so my air consumption should be high. But I dive with a group of 1-2-3-4-5,000 dive individuals, and I never am the one to call a dive. Secret- relax and breath deeply and...

Is your Idea of good Vis skewed?

Our Students have to learn in 5 foot viz typically in our quarries during the summer months and September. 8-10 foot off season if we are lucky. I enjoy it- rather calming- but tough on the students, and it makes running the classes more stressful. Communication between the DiveCons and...

Weighing In Discrepencies...OVER WEIGHTED...UNDER WEIGHTED??? Pony Bottle

Here is a listing of the weights and capacities of most common tanks: Scuba Cylinder Specifications from Tech Diving Limited - 928-855-9400 My 19sf al pony with the regs is 2 pounds negative, as I weighed in in a pool with a luggage scale. Terry

Should diving agencies have stricter requirements for certification and check?

I agree with TSandM that it is two separate problems. I just finished a weekend of special diving (mine) and in a group of six, there were three just out of OW training. They were enthusiastic, and very open to suggestions, but unfortunately exhibited traits (IMHO) of weak training...

FINALLY !!! meet SSI's newest pro

Congrats- it takes a lot of work. I just finished Dive Con several weeks ago, and found it more enjoyable, although a lot of work. Good luck with your studies. Terry

    PADI E-Cards

I haven't read every post, but I think I'm real happy right now that I am SSI- the app works great. Good luck to you PADI folks to get this worked out. Cost them little or nothing, but not the person with the certification. Terry

Open Water Checkout Dives This Week

As the others above have said, relax and enjoy. Breath deeply and just enjoy the experience. Warm water checkouts are great, as opposed to our fabulous, cold, low viz quarries in our locale. Good luck, Terry

    Hold on Wait a Minute

After my first pool dive, my daughter and I bought a large amount of our equipment beyond that required for the class. Wetsuit, regs, BC, hoods. I should first state my daughter is studying Marine Biology, so most likely she will continue to dive, and our thinking was she should have her own...

Does "Discover SCUBA" discourage new divers?

Pardon me for not reading the thread, but I just had to give my THANKS to those that conduct these DSDs well and it is shops like ours that they often go to in order to start/complete their training. Rest assured they receive the proper training they need. Terry

'Super-cheap' dive qualification to only 3m/10ft

Just wrong in so many ways. But do they offer the corresponding Nitrox course... ;) while avoiding any theory..... Our dive shop offers three flavors of courses, slow, medium, and fast. Fast is a Thursday night class, Saturday night 3.5 hours in the pool, Sunday morning 4 hours in...

    Sometimes optimism isn't enough

I'm a SSI DM, and the costs were not as high. The course was a flat $595, which included all the materials, tests, etc. Air fills for the DMC and above are taken care of by the shop, so no fee there. The worst cost was when accompanying a class, the $20-35 per day to enter the quarry...

Can someone explain the ins and outs of drysuits.

I am a diver in the Fusion camp- not in love with it, but didn't want to spend a fortune on a DUI custom suit (probably will eventually). I have very short legs, short arms, long torso, so the Fusion works. Also have back issues, and the Fusion is very flexible. I also dive it without ankle...

    The (minor) troubles of charters

I had the opposite problem in a Scuba Update class the other day. Pool, Steel tanks. This woman, all 120 pounds of her, insisted that she needed 24 pounds of lead! She was absolutely emphatic, and in the end I let her start with it. I was 100 pounds more than her and I had 2 pounds. Well...

Looking for dive info around South MD

Highly recommend OC diver with Ted Green just off Route 50 before the bridge. While he does a lot of technical dives, he does have a number of recreational charters. Headed out with him next week. And there are hundreds of shipwrecks off MD and DE. Terry
