I dove with an Oceanic Geo 2 for years, and loved it; I still have an old one I use as a backup or lend when folks forget theirs. But as soon as I went Shearwater, I realized I was never going back.
If the AI really matters to you, the Shearwater Tern (watch style rec computer) and Peregrine...
I own both of these exact reg sets. I *personally* prefer diving the Atomic Z2s - they breathe nicer and I hate fiddling with the ScubaPro predive/dive switch. The Z2s are my primary recreational regs, and what I dive on all my single tank open water dives.
I have relegated my Mk17 Evo/G260...
I’d vote 5mm but I run cold - I no longer dive 3mm suits at all, and use a 5mm for all my tropical diving. Below 80 degrees I’m in a 7mm (or preferably, a drysuit).
If your wife will be in Orlando, you’re right that the drift diving off Jupiter is probably a bit advanced right now, but you might consider diving some of the Florida springs. They’re a great place to work on skills and get experience, esp for newer divers. And while they aren’t “cold” water...
I feel you! I’m in Texas right now visiting family, and itching to get back home to Florida. I’ve found books and podcasts scratch that itch, as well as what you’ve been doing (reading and researching shopping lists). I’m buying a new drysuit, and obsessively (re)reading about all the options...
Ah, that context makes sense. I walked out of a shop the other day (won't name names) with 4400 psi in my tanks (I know, I know)....think I'd sob if I got home and saw they'd only been filled to 3000!
I’m sorry folks have been harsh, that’s rarely helpful! But I’m glad you’re finding what’s useful in the feedback, and using it to make your project better - and glad to hear so many folks have filled it out. I hope you’re not put off by people’s responses, and consider coming back to give us a...
Depends on the field. I’m a psych prof, we definitely expect more of our master’s projects but we are a behavioral science discipline. Survey design is our bread and butter.
I’ve been an “outside” committee member on master’s theses outside our field, and this is fairly typical for a master’s...
That’s a good list. If I had to prioritize, I’d suggest the following:
For your first day, if you’re staying in Chiefland do a “check out” dive 1 at Fanning to get her comfy in the water again and do a gear check; then drive over to Manatee to hit the headspring (dive 2) and Catfish Hotel...
Any reg is fine. I have one set of Atomic Z2s in a standard recreational configurafkon (secondary donate w/octo, yoke regs). What can make a difference is how you route your hoses, and the hose lengths you choose. Go with a simple brass and glass SPG (DiveGearExpress sells several), not a...
In general, I do find that divers tend to be able to drop some weight as they get more experienced. A large part of this is just relaxation on the initial descent; many new divers who could hold a safety stop with say 12 pounds may need 14-16 to descend.
Usually this is due to two things -...
What? I don’t think anyone is disagreeing with that - we leave a reserve in both recreational and technical diving. What’s different is how MUCH of a reserve we leave.
In rec diving, the reserve is small (500 psi, or about 10-15cf on a typical AL80). In technical diving the reserve is large...
Yes, it’s common to overweight new divers, but it’s also true that new divers need more weight - and will drop a few pounds as they get more experience. The 10% rule is for a 3mm wetsuit - you will need substantially more for a 7mm wetsuit, and I find that rule of thumb works better for men...
Rule of thirds is for backgas penetration (let’s ignore stages for now). You need to calculate your deco gas separately.
Any serious deco dive is going to include a separate tank and gas for deco (at least a 100% O2 tank for your 20’ stop, possibly another tank for 50% for deeper stops). You...
Love Horizon for the double dip on the Spiegel Grove. Also a big fan of Conch Republic and Silent World in Key Largo.
Key Dives is also nice if you’re in Islamorada.
Mechanical SPGs aren’t perfectly accurate. They are most accurate in the middle, and least accurate at the high and low end of their ranges where they can be off by up to a couple hundred PSI. That’s a huge reason why you want to surface with that 500psi reserve - below that pressure you can’t...
I have a CX3, took it for a whirl at Ginnie yesterday. I like it a lot! My other backups (for reference) are mostly DGX lights.
The CX3 is considerably brighter than my little Light Monkey 12w primary; the lumen rating checks out in direct side-by-side comparison. The Light Monkey is rated at...
