    Sony RX - 100 or canon 100d

This is where a wideangle wet lens and a smaller sensor on the rx100 help; for the same subject distance and angle of view, you'll get more depth of field at f/1.8 from the Sony than from the Canon. Little need to stop down much beyond 4.0 to 5.6 or so for any wideangle shots with the rx100...

    Sony RX - 100 or canon 100d

The RX100 has a lot going for it, but you can achieve your photographic goals with either. Over/under shots should be easier with a larger dome an an ultrawide zoom lens for the 100D. I prefer the compact size and flexibility of my rx100 setup, but that's very personal. My skill is still the...

    Buoyancy device recommendation

A more expensive expensive product, sure. Better? Nah. I enjoy expensive toys as much as the next guy :-p In this analogy, the Hydros is a pimped out Toyota with blinking LED lights, pumping bass woofer and heated bucket seats with massage function clad in snakeskin leather, and the...

    Bonaire in January

We got back a few weeks ago. I was plenty warm in my 3.5mm full suit, never too hot, only occasionally a little cool (on days with 3+ 80+ minute dives), but comfortable. My girlfriend had a non-hooded extra 5mm vest under that, and still got a little chilly, but she always does. Other times I've...

    Buoyancy device recommendation

I haven't seen many user reviews on the new Hydros, and it's a very expensive piece of kit that seems to be 'solving' problems I don't see as even existing. I'm sure it's nice, but since I can buy several wings and different back plates and various weight integration solutions for that kind of...

    Buoyancy device recommendation

I have a relatively short SPG, just long enough to reach the left hip D-ring without slack. I often end up moving it to my left chest D-ring so I can see it by glancing down slightly. Just makes getting out of the harness a bit fussier so I move it back to the hip towards the end of the dive.

    Devil's Throat - Cozumel

Depends on your gas and dive profiles, I suppose. I've never run out of bottom time on the types of dive profiles I do, and I've done several 80 minutes dives on an AL80 on Bonaire (which is where I've done about 1/3 of all my dives). I don't tend to go very deep, average dive profile there is...

Two new resorts announced for the old Sunset Beach property near Bari Reef

The Courtyard Marriot is open. Looks nice from the outside, albeit a little charmlessly corporate (it's a Marriot, so pretty much par for the course I guess), and it's right next to the airport.

Oh no! I have become ...

I've only been diving locally once, because I don't like cold and generally v. poor visibility, and don't have a dry suit (yet?). We've had a great diving year, resort-based Raja Ampat and a few day trips in Komodo, and just came back from a few weeks on Bonaire, which has been an almost every...

    RX100 ii and white balance

Get a red filter like the Magic Filter or use external lighting/strobes. In all seriousness, the latitude for white balance adjustment isn't wide enough on the RX100 for anything but shallow depths with bright sunlight.

I really like my BP/W - it's a pretty 'standard' 30 lb wing with an aluminum backplate (initially bought due to travel weight). It's easy to break down and pack small. I also prefer my no-STA-required variant to my girlfriend's STA version. I currently have weight pockets mounted as well. Whole...

    Boiling Webbing?

There's a degree of variability in webbing stiffness in my very limited experience. The stuff on my plate (recline) is nicely stiff, and the crotch strap fairly supple. The webbing on my GF'/"s backplate is significantly stiffer. I prefer mine - slightly easier to slip in and out of, and good...

2 DCS hits and a PFO closure

We're not discussing the diagnosis of illness, so the quote above has no bearing here. It's also only true for tests that are near-perfect; risk stratification (probabilistic calculations) can tremendously improve your diagnostic yield for tests that do not have excellent sensitivity AND...

    Container for flying gear?

We have a simple Samsonite hardshell roller (the now discovery noticed aeris), which will hold 2 full sets of gear minus the regard and computers (Alu BP/W, 3.5mm full suits, Accel find, booties, masks, DSMB+spool, assorted knickknacks), weight around 21-23kg. Tough, non-descript, fairly easy to...

2 DCS hits and a PFO closure

Until there is solid evidence that the benefit of screening outweighs the risk, no. Just as preventive screening CT or MRI scans in healthy, asymtopatic individuals are bad medicine and bad science from an epidemiological perspective. The quality and usability of a test as a diagnostic or...

    Opinions on potential BP/W setup

Or Deep6, for example. I have a Polish BP/W (tecline) which is mid-price here in Europe, and looks identical to the Deep6 wing. I like it a lot. Backplate and webbing shouldn't add a huge amount to cost.

    Diving without computers

Frankly, I'd need to read the book again and fiddle around with the table to figure out what, exactly, is appropriate. I rely on my (and my GF's) computer and generally conservative dive planning (I don't do deco, I dive within the nitrox limits, and air consumption is pretty much always the...

    Favorite underwater meals

Point taken. My cutoff would be more than 4 hours for an activity as low-intensity as Scuba. I don't take food on my (high intensity) bike rides if I'm out for less than 2 hours. Fluids yes, food no.

    Big gasser

While training increases aerobic capacity, your conclusion that greater aerobic capacity will equal greater air consumption is not entirely correct. Aerobic capacity is the ability of the entire cardiorespriatory system to extract and use oxygen efficiently when exercising, i.e. provide the...
