Death in Cocos from shark attack

I have always been excited to see sharks when diving but have not knowingly been in the presence of the more dangerous varieties of sharks. This incident has shaken my confidence as I am sure it has others. So tragic for this lady, her family, and all involved Someone on the other thread on...

Finder's fee for recovered camera- is it appropriate?

This does not seem above board to me. Regardless of what the "other dive operators" has or has not done in the past is irrelevant. This is a classic case of two wrongs not making a right. It is the client that suffers and the dive op was not even responsible for the recovery of the camera. I...

...and just about everybody is diving nitrox

    Down currents

One more thing to add. How to react depends on where you are when the down current hits and how strong it is. If I'm next to the wall and it seems like a surefire ride to 200, then I'm hanging on. **** the coral in this one scenario only. I'll hang on and wait 5 minutes to see if it passes or...

    Down currents

Down currents happen in Cozumel. Most are manageable some are severe and it helps to have advance knowledge on how to handle yourself. I find it a tad bit irresponsible to advise folks not to worry just because you personally may not have experienced a potentially life threatening down current...

    Down currents

Let me add that I have been to Cozumel 10 times in the last 4 years. In over 120 dives there, I have only experienced a down current twice, both times in late spring/early summer, both times on Santa Rosa and only one of those were strong enough to warrant a mention. Certainly not a reason to...

    Down currents

We experienced a rather strong down current In Cozumel last April. I was slightly in the blue off the Santa Rosa wall videotaping an eagle ray. The rest of my group were on top of the reef. Suddenly the eagle ray made a drastic 90 degree turn upward which I didn't understand until later was a...

    Reef Quality in Cozumel

Probably the healthiest reefs in the Caribbean are at The Flower Gardens Marine Sanctuary in the Gulf of Mexico since its 110 nautical miles offshore and less impacted by human activity. It never disappoints.

    Reef Quality in Cozumel

Those shots you are referring to (2:10-3:00) are typically what you see at the end of the dive. More soft corals and sand but much to see in these spots as well. Large Parrotfish, Southern Rays, Eagle Rays (when in season), Scorpion Fish, Flamingo Tongues, etc. There is a reason we keep coming...

    Reef Quality in Cozumel

I'm not sure what videos you are referring to but I dive in Cozumel at least twice yearly and find the reefs absolutely beautiful. Here is a link to a video I made last year covering over 15 dives across most the popular reefs. You can judge for yourself but I didn't see any of the algae you...

    Please beware of Crocs.

Have there been crocodile/scuba diver encounters? Are there some reefs at higher risk of encounter? Time of day, etc?

SI at Mr Sancho's no mas?

I love Palancar Beach Club. Less crowded. Laid back and relaxing. The food is decent at a fair price. They have outdoor showers, clean bathrooms and nice facility overall. Only down side is the rocks in the water as you exit the boats. Minor inconvenience.

    My Cozumel Dive Video

I am finally getting around to sharing my dive video from a couple of years ago. Better late than never I figure. This is this best of over 250 clips I took over a week of diving various dive sites with Aldora. I hope you enjoy.

    Hydroid sting or shingles?

This is a classic case of when hoofbeats are zebras that they teach in medical school. The most probable diagnosis is contact dermatitis from contact with the hydroid. My reaction to a hydroid sting took weeks to resolve. Start using hydrocortisone and be patient. It will resolve with time.

    Operator(s) at Presidente?

We always stay at Presidente and we use Aldora. Pickup is a breeze. The pier is directly in front of open air restaurant. Have breakfast and coffee while waiting for the boat. Only rarely have had to wait until Scuba Du loads and that is no longer than 5 minutes. Aldora knows the schedule and...
