    Intro buddies Dec 26th-28th

My wife is out of vacation days so I figure I'd do some Intro dives over Christmas. Looking to get up Wednesday the 26th and head to cave country - diving late morning Wednesday, all day Thursday, and most of the day Friday. Intro dives to 1/6 of doubles. I'm really new currently have 4 dives...

I'm no professional photographer, but I think you'll recognize the cave

I agree - the algae bloom is finally down - the basins and the caverns look great. Well Friday morning someone blew out the cavern by the peanut line somewhat - but it happens especially with all the training. Pothole looked fantastic on Friday! We didn't go in Pothole until Friday after lunch...

Spiegel & Duane 12/1/07 great price

You will probably need AOW to do the Duane and Spiegel Grove. More importantly than AOW - is to be confident in your skills with possible high current - current was ripping on my Spiegel dive - and be able to plan your gas for 100 feet or so. But the operator will probably require you to have...

    (Yet Another) Which Drysuit Question

Never dove an Evo2 but my cave instructor had one and it looked tough as nails. I hate big rubber boots - I see Pinnacle's web site mentions socks instead of boots - but I haven't seen anyone with them. I love my TLS350. It dives nearly like a wet suit. I still have to add air - but I have...

    Drysuit for Florida

    (Yet Another) Which Drysuit Question

Not me personally but there are several people who would be plenty comfortable in a 7mil farmer john - though probably not many on a long dive with deco. I don't like attached attached boots - much prefer socks - or in my case turbo soles. So the Evo2 wouldn't be a great option for me - but...

    BC's with "Elevator" Lever

But of course the only alternative to a dive and kick down - must be a rapid feet first decent, ending with a crash into the bottom. Thats how I dive - dump and sink as fast as I can until I smack into the bottom. Then I crawl all over the reef until I'm just about out of air. I hit my elevator...

    BC's with "Elevator" Lever

Presumably you have a full tank when you have to do this dip and dive maneuver. So what happens at 15ft when you do your safety stop and you are 5-6 lbs lighter? If you can't decend by letting air out of your BC then you are either positive or neutral at best so at the end with a AL80 you are...

    Drysuit for Florida

I bought my TLS350 used for about 1K and its fully equipped with 2 bellows pockets, balanced P-valve, and turbo soles. I've only had it on 3 diving weekends so far (15 dives or so) but I love it. I dive in the springs (which are 71ish) with fairly thin undergarments and stay toasty warm in and...

    "Guided" 200' dive with a single AL80?

Yup ask the NSS-CDS or NACD how many Open Water Instructors have been pulled from caves after getting lost. Being an Open Water Instructor has nothing to do with being trained and prepared for technical dives. From TDS... Asking them to go where I went? Many people on that site go to 200...

    Is this safe?

Would you not abort if your SPG failed? And by abort I mean - hmm, my SPG isn't working well I had 2000 PSI guess I better head to the upline and start my ascent - not OMG!!! My spg isn't working!!! BOLT!!!!! Why? You are at safety stop depth. If you computer or SPG fails, finish your stop...

Brrrrrr!!! November Water Temps! What up with this?

I dive dry year round in Florida - them caves are nearly the same temp all the time. I enjoy being a wuss about water temp.

    BC's with "Elevator" Lever

Yup - Marketing droids. This lever adds and removes air much like your standard inflator/deflator except the deflate is wired to all the dump valves at once. I would bet the guy who came up with it did not design it as push down to descend/push up to ascend. However Marketing got ahold of this...

    Signal for Entanglement

As you specifically mention this in a student-teacher relationship - I think I would make it part of the course discussion to discuss this issue. Ask them what they would do when given a light attention signal. Then ask them how that might negatively affect them if they were entangled. Ask them...

    Signal for Entanglement

Perhaps altering what you teach for a response to a light signal might help. My cave instructor taught the most effective way of looking behind you is to look between your legs. Done effectively your students should be able to see the follow up signal (entanglement) with out getting further...

Lost one of our own on Thursday.

Terrible news. Very true about our small family getting even smaller. Condolences to his family, friends, and dive buddies. Not sure about the wake up call. From the sound of it (so far, major speculation) but this could have happened in open water with much the same outcome. Very sad day here...

    Mixing different Certifying Agencies

More importantly what are your goals? What specialties do you want and why? What certification do you want beyond Rescue? The only "certification" I can think of beyond Rescue that requires specialties is Master Scuba Diver - and IMHO that is not something worth pursuing.
