Do cave divers need wreck training?

Agreed ... and you're a lot more experienced in caves than I am. But I've never been in a situation in a cave where I thought to myself "sure wish I had a compass" ... ... Bob (Grateful Diver)

    Pull Dumps — lose them

Did they not stop making those? The Halcyon wings I purchased back in 2005-2006 came with them ... the one I purchased more recently came with a plastic inflator ... ... Bob (Grateful Diver)

Do cave divers need wreck training?

... unless you accidentally, in that reduced vis, swim down a side-entrance without realizing it. No thanks ... I'll stick to tying off a line and doing a sweep search. At least that way I won't wander even farther off the line than I might otherwise ... and I'll have a way to get back to my...

Recommendation for vacation home near great diving

We dive year round here in the Pacific Northwest too ... but we don't have winters like they have in Maine. I'm definitely not the type to be dressing up for a dive when it's -20 F outside, and the harbor's frozen over ... ... Bob (Grateful Diver)

Do cave divers need wreck training?

Do cave divers need wreck training?

... fat lot of good it'll do you if you don't have a continuous line to the entrance ... following a compass in a cave is a dandy way to find yourself moving in the right direction down a tunnel that won't lead you out of the cave. ... Bob (Grateful Diver)

Recommendation for vacation home near great diving

Not surprising. Consider this ... living someplace isn't like visiting there on vacation. I love Bali ... been there many times, know the different regions on the island, the pros and cons of living there, and the economics based on my expected retirement income. Decided that although I...

Recommendation for vacation home near great diving

I've been researching the same thing, for the same reason. Some places I've looked into ... Bali, Philippines, Baja (am heading down there in five weeks, partly to explore LaPaz and north parts of the peninsula), Costa Rica, and Panama. As a foreigner, you can't buy property in some of these...

    Pull Dumps — lose them

I once experienced the opposite problem. Had an AOW student borrow one of my rigs once. They're all BP/W with a simple elbow connection. On our first dive we surface swam out to a buoy, and when I gave the signal to submerge the kid grabs the inflator hose and gives it a yank. Naturally, nothing...

    Life expectancy of dive computers?

I spent about $1000 once on a Dive Rite trimix analyzer. Little did I know that Dive Rite used an Analox knockoff with a proprietary oxygen sensor. And once the sensor died I discovered that DR no longer supported this product. I ended up giving it away to someone looking for spare parts. That...

    Life expectancy of dive computers?

Depends on the computer. I've gone through a few over the years ... some still worked when I got rid of them. Some died within a relatively short period of time. And some never worked right even when they were brand new. I currently own two dive computers ... a Shearwater Petrel (one of the...

... they also provide the additional training and experience I was referring to. And although I disagree with their premise, they do provide their students with the requisite skills to pull it off. Compare that to the IANTD Recreational trimix class I took in 2007 ... the instructor allowed his...

NITROX for any and all dives?

I exceed NDL's routinely ... usually without ever hitting 100 fsw. It's not rocket surgery ... you just come up slow and honor your obligation. And if you're planning a second dive, make sure your plans also include a healthy surface interval and lots of water ... ... Bob (Grateful Diver)

NITROX for any and all dives?

I've not heard that one before ... and it's nonsense. The reason you're feeling dry mouth is because residual moisture is removed from your breathing gas ... otherwise as it pressurizes the moisture content would condense and collect in the bottom of your tank. This is true regardless of the mix...
