New park fees for Socorros and Guadalupe, beginning January 1, 2021

Just received this notice ... it won't affect our upcoming trip, as we're heading out in a few days. But if you're planning a trip after January 1, prepare for a rather significant financial hit. It'll cost you an extra $75 per day per diver in park fees ... New Marine Park Fees Revillagigedo...

    Loreto, Which Dive Shop?

Chiming in kind've late ... I don't visit these forums very much anymore. But I have been living in Loreto these past two years, and dive with Blue Nation often. I can't say much about the other two dive ops, as I don't use them and it would be hearsay. But Blue Nation is awesome to dive with...

    Cabo Pulmo/La Paz

Watch the weather ... predictions are currently showing a big tropical storm hitting the Cabo area on Aug 17. I use Windy.com, as it tends to be fairly reliable down here. Not sure La Paz is open for diving yet (might be, I live in Loreto which is 225 miles north of there). Contact a local...

Wanted Olympus OMD EM-5 Mkii or OMD EM-1 MK ii Set up

Oh, and with all of this out there, the OP has decided to purchase the kit … I think he got a sweet deal, given the full disclosure of the known issues described above. … Bob (Grateful Diver)

Wanted Olympus OMD EM-5 Mkii or OMD EM-1 MK ii Set up

This is the info I received from the publisher of an underwater photography magazine on the subject … The only chronic known-issue that I'm aware of is the flash. It's just not that hearty and a few have even been DOA. Olympus is aware of this and great about facilitating warranty...

Wanted Olympus OMD EM-5 Mkii or OMD EM-1 MK ii Set up

I have an EM-5 MKII, complete with housing, flat port, dome port, 14-42 lens, 60 lens, 8-18 lens, and two flashes. Bought the whole setup, used it a few times, and decided I really don't like it. I could consider selling it. But, full disclosure, I think Olympus should never have bundled this...

    Exceeding NDL on an al80?

... even if he limited his comments to strictly an AL80 (aka "oversized beer can") ... it can still be done. On a larger single cylinder ... such as a 119 ... you can go into NDL even using EAN32, assuming reasonable air consumption rate ... ... Bob (Grateful Diver)

Retirement plan to support my "habit"

Retirement plan to support my "habit"

Thanks. I did, in fact, check out Loreto while down there and fell in love with the place. I have plans to go back once I retire, and find a rental for a minimum of six months. If I still love it there, I'll stick around. If not, I'll continue my "walkabout" ... I have nothing but time at that...

The Thing You Thought You'd Never See ...

... reminds me of an old friend who got certified in 2002. A couple weeks later he sends me an email from Florida, where he told me he was the most experienced diver on the boat ... he had all of eight dives at the time, including his four check-out dives ... ... Bob (Grateful Diver)

    Diving ages

We had this exact scenario happen locally a few years back. Mom and son got certified, then immediately signed up for a trip to Fiji. The dive shop sponsors a "group dive" at a local dive site to give the new divers on the trip a dive or two before heading to Fiji. Only problem is that group...

    Diving ages

It varies with the child. I just came off a Socorros trip with a father and his 13 year old daughter. And for the most part we were diving in pretty advanced conditions. The kid was an amazing diver ... and in many ways more mature than some adults I know ... ... Bob (Grateful Diver)

    Midlife Adventure Crisis!

Would happily dive with you ... but I'm just a few months from retirement, at which point I'm going to sell my house and go on walkabout ... perhaps for the rest of my life. I work in Tacoma ... it's a great area, with some really nice dive sites. Day Island Wall is probably the best diving in...

    Midlife Adventure Crisis!

While Mt. St. Helens was dormant for 140 years, it was still considered (and still is) an active volcano. Since the eruption in 1980, there has been continuous volcanic activity in the form of steam vents and dome build-up. It could erupt again at any time ... ... Bob (Grateful Diver)

    Midlife Adventure Crisis!

Often the shallows are where the best life is at. I did two dives on Sunday at one of my all-time favorite shore dives ... a place called Sekiu, on the westernmost part of Washington State. First dive maxed at 26 feet, second was at 34. Besides having amazing stuff to look at, the shallower...
