Question Panic in the experienced diver?

Can't say I have been panicked, but have definitely been "dark narc'd" 1 dive to 110' got to the wreck, and could not get rid of the thought if I stay here I am going to die. I signaled my buddy and ended the dive, and haven't had it since, but it really pushed home the thought of how no matter...

    SSI Class - Failed

First, addressing the OP, when I teach an open water class, you do the skill right, or you do it again until you do the skill properly, no ifs, ands or buts. If you struggle with a skill myself or a CA will keep helping you until you do master it. We will then do an extra pool session to catch...

    Dear dive professionals,

+1 on getting it checked before you dive it. Lynne, you beat me to it about the low pressure inflator.

Blown hose during open water checkout dive

Kudos to that instructor, so many times I have seen instructors leading a dive, blissfully unaware that the divers behind them are not certified. I always use a dive master or AI to lead tours, so I can trail and watch the students.

My (newish) dive buddy makes a good choice...

Done very well & calmly, good job by all, except diver D should have been more aware of his air before that.

Signal tube deployment : going up with the device! scary...

Use a finger spool, it will hang right in front of you as your bag goes up. I agree with Lynne, always be horizontal when deploying, bag and spool arms length in front of you, inflate it and watch(don't hold) spool as it unwinds.

    Buddy System

On a dive charter, my insta buddy told me I really didn't need to go over all those procedures and practices as he was ALMOST a dive master and had over 70 dives. That immediately put me on watch, and sure enough, we did the safety stop on my tank, after I slowed his ascent so he didn't hurt...

    so satisfied

I taught advanced open water this weekend, and everyone in the class did a peak performance buoyancy dive as part of their 5 dives. All 4 students hovered horizontally for 90 seconds, totally motionless, it was so gratifying to see students actually applying what you teach.

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly of Side Mount

Use left & right handed valves solve the roll off problems, I don't cave dive, so not going to comment on what caverns run into. I do dive wrecks, and appreciate side mount for tight places.

Do you check your pressure gauge BEFORE getting in the water?

I have developed a ritual, and since the last thing I do before I splash is breathe off of both regulators while watching on of the spgs(ai computer, redundant analog gauge) I have never splashed with the air off. During a dive, thanks to teaching, I check gauges frequently, and ask other...

    How do you just 'practice'?

I too use the hula hoop in the pool, I always have an extra night in the pool during o/w classes, hula hoop suspended from bottom and spend the whole time working on kicking and buoyancy.

    My SAC is really bad.

New equipment that affects buoyancy and trim will cause stress and anxiety, which affects breathing. Get comfortable dealing with the drysuit, do some shallow dives to get used to the drysuit, when you relax with your buoyancy, you will consume less air.

Weight belt on top of or under crotch strap?

Bob, could not agree more! Buckle for crotch strap and buckle for weight belt right by each other, in pre dive safety check, go over procedure for dumping belt... if wearing one.
