Try these folks: Sea Oats Motel & Management Company
Wifey and I stayed with them back in the spring. Nothing fancy but it's a nice place on the beach and conveniently located. Go down 98 towards Seaside and eat at the Donut Hole for Breakfast. You will not regret it.
Here's another place...
Actually if you ponder it, any diving in an overhead environment would probably not qualify as "great idea" . But we do many things in life that are not great ideas. Heck if we limited ourselves only to stuff that were great ideas, we'd probably be very bored. Actually boredom is probably the...
I second the recommendation for Conch Republic. They are a good outfit and they can help you find lodging too.

Hey jrayrod welcome to the board. Depending on currents and tides the whiskey would make a pretty good night dive.
Here's a recent dive report on the whiskey http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/deep-dixie-divers/251898-8-30-8-whiskey-wreck-dive-report.html
Why don't you look around the deep...
Great question!!! Good topic. I love wrecks and have been fascinated by them since I dove on my first one on my 7th dive. You however are in a much better position than I since wreck diving has become institutionalized and you have a great discussion board to view. You may want to peruse some of...
Fascinating discussion on uses of pony bottles and gas switching. Not that's there's anything wrong with it with proper planning and equipment. I do it too. However, could you have rented or been loaned higher capacity tanks so that all of you would be diving with close to the same size tanks...
I've done both. I actually got hung up inside a wreck while solo once. Had to doff my equipment, clear the obstruction, and don my equipment before exiting. I've got independent redundant air sources with plenty of reserve anytime I have a soft or hard ceiling.

I think we've pretty much got it right now. Maybe the descriptions need a little work. If you go through and read most of the dive reports and topics in DDD you will find most talking about panhandle or North Gulf Coast diving. The second most common topic is diving inland lakes and quarries...
As others have suggested North Carolina is a nice car ride away with some world class wreck diving and the warm waters of the gulf steam.

I used to use rocket fins and they worked well. I know use splits aminly because they are easier on my arthritic knees. I can get them to work adequately for wrecks.

It ain't hard to get a Gecko into Deco!!! it's a very conservative computer. I've got one and I always go into deco well before any of my buddies diving different computers.

There's a lot of Panhandle traffic in DDD. Personally I do most of my Salt water diving from St. Joe's to Biloxi. Now I'm mainly diving in the Orange Beach/ Pensacola area but previously the Panama City/ St Joe's region was my main playground. Like most of you I post mainly in DDD but I also...
