Redundant air sources and the new diver

Additionally, many people dive with insta-buddies who have "heaven-only-knows" buddy skills... just because you splash with somebody that is "supposed" to be your buddy doesn't mean that they actually know ANYTHING about diving at all. How many stories have we all heard about "buddies from...

    General Vortex Incident Discussion

Yeah, I can remember the look Edd gave the boots on my LP 120's when I brought them in for a fill. It was a look of "what are those disgusting things doing on perfectly good tanks"... I guess I should say the boots that were FORMERLY on my 120's... hey, at least I have an excuse, they were on...

how deep is your normal dive range?

I don't always dive to the bottom, especially when the bottom is measured in thousands of feet. Call me a wuss, but 3000 feet is just a wee deep for me (or 1000 meters if you prefer).

how deep is your normal dive range?

What is my average dive? My average ocean boat dive, my average quarry dive or my average dive in a spring cavern? My average ocean boat dive is about 70, my average quarry dive is about 35 and my average spring cavern is 65 more or less.

    Shark awareness certification

Honestly, Fish ID isn't that hard, get a good book and read it, much cheaper than getting a C-Card that, frankly, is just a piece of plastic.

    Spare Air

Nah... breath 14 percent... since spare airs will not really work well at depths where you can get narked, go the other way, dive shallow and get your buzz from good old hypoxia.

Back Plate Wing vs Back Inflate BC

Umm... absolutely nothing IMHO. I put the first one I ever tried on, jumped in the water and said "OK, this is good" and that was about it.

    Spare Air

No, it quickly runs out of gas and just dies.

    Purchased steel 100's, new weighting.

BTW you are going to like your 100's, they trim out nice and who doesn't want to lose 6 pounds off the belt?

Need to practise making safe ascents & descents

We use this technique all the time. We call it the "rump dump". In addition to being effective, it looks like a stream of bubbles are coming out of your bum... which is very fun in a "sophomoric" kind of way. He's right though... you can dump way too much air if you just yank hard on your...

Need to practise making safe ascents & descents

The above horizontal advice is excellent, assuming you are not diving a drysuit.

Need to practise making safe ascents & descents

Honestly, at 15 feet you shouldn't have much if any air in your wing. At the end of your dive, you should have an empty wing at 15 feet with 500psi left in your tank and be able to control your buoyancy with your breathing if you are properly weighted. When you put air in your wing or vent it...

    Using Air WAY to Fast

Guessing it is accurate and KNOWING it is accurate are two different things. Additionally, your extra gas isn't just for you, it is for your buddy as well. What happens if you are down to 120, you look over and see your buddy has gotten entangled in a huge ball of mono line he or she cant get...

    Legal Implication of Uncertified Divers

I know of no law that requires you to be certified in the US to dive.

Woman critical after West Van scuba diving accident - Canada

Yeah, I personally don't want to look like an ICBM launching either... especially since I am still gaining experience in my drysuit. I keep it pretty "squeezed" going up, although I am not going to want to swim hard enough to exert myself at depth.

    I Just Canceled a Dive

Great decision. Doubts about your safety are not something you want running through your head at 135 feet when you are heavily narked... that can turn into a dark nark pretty darned quick.

    Are you a dive snob?

I have nothing whatever to be snobbish about. If I dove like some of the guys and gals on this board, then perhaps I could be a snob, but frankly I kind of still suck at diving... I like to think I am getting better, but I know the truth... Gear snob? No way. I dive what I dive because it...

    what would you do?

Hey Gary, long time no see! We haven't been your way in a while, probably be a couple weeks before we are back but you never know. Personally, I would take a few bux if they offered because air costs money (yeah, I know that's nuts, but it does) especially if you were diving your doubles...
