    Kauai advice sought

I'm lucky enough to be going to Kauai sometime in the next 18 months. We get to pick the time, but have a variety of scheduling constraints to work around. I'm seeking some information on whether there are "don't go" and "best possible" times of year for diving, and also information on whether...

    Any feedback about SEASOFT

I have two pair of their stealth bnoots and recommend them to everyone who asks. Also gloves and a nice thick "dry" hood. I find these products to be awesome quality, but since you're asking about service I'm assuming you have something more substantial in mind...

    Scubapro Reel - 80m

What Vie said. Assuming you want that much line because you are going to need it, winding 80 - 100 meters of line onto a spool would suck. I would much rather be cranking a reel. Like DA, I like the Reef reel I have for its design. I also use a Halcyon reel which though of a different design...

Six year old Snorkler killed by 13yo boater

So many cautions to take away from this very sad incident... Since few details offered I wouldn't want to speculate on what could have be done differently, but my heart goes out to this family that was out for a fun time and instead ended up with an inspeakable tragedy.

    Ditch the 7 ft. hose

Are you having this experience in singles, doubles, or both? With a single tank I find the 7-footer can be too long, especially if you don't have an anchoring point on the right hip as El Orans suggests. I also use a knife mounted in the center of the waist strap for a second anchor, as I...

    poorly built Halcyon evolve

A few points. Sorry to hear you had a challenging dive, but it sounds like you kept your head and dealt with the situation as you should have. Well done, plenty of divers would have panicked. Unless I am mistaken and I don't think I am, that wing is designed for divers who swim and ascend...

    I'm lost.

You are so right about that. I look at my beginner pics with the 8080 compared to, say, CalypsoNick's, and it's like having prescription lenses versus not. The good photographers like Nick are proof of how well you can do, and they will tell you it's like any craft - all about practicing to...

    I'm lost.

I agree you have to be discerning, but both the C8080 and PT023 I got were under warranty and eligible for the Olympus factory extended warranty. And way cheaper than they would have been from any store. I also didn't bid like a dope or buy the first one that I saw, but that's a whole...

    I'm lost.

EBay is your friend. Between there and the Olympus outlet I got a C8080, PT-023 housing, two Sea & Sea YS 60 strobes and a Pelican 1550 case for well under $1000. I added a Heinrichs Weikamp TTL bulkead (see posts in Oly Outlet here) and I have full TTL capability. And I got it all insured...

    Dive Safaris in St. Maarten?

Thanks to each of you for your thoughts. Likely won't have a great deal of choice given where we're staying but it's reassuring to know they are a decent outfit.

    LIONFISH in the Atlantic

I saw lionfish on the wreck of the Caribsea off of Cape Lookout NC last summer. I found a juvenile hanging on a particular steel or iron beam laying down on the bottom, went back three days later with a camera and it was there in the same place, got a photo.

    C8080 with Pt-023 and Sea & Sea YS90

I use the C8080, PT023, and YS 60. I went with the Matthias TTL replacement bulkhead which I would recommend. You can find it here: http://www.heinrichsweikamp.net/blitz/indexe.htm I haven't tried the fiber slave solution, but I have been happy with the results I have gotten - Full TTL...

    PT-023 - how deep?

I'm interested in how deep you have taken your PT-023 without a flood or other problems. I know what the rated depth is, but I have a "project" that is a bit deeper. No guarantees in life, but I'm curious what others' experiences are. Insurance is paid up.

    Dive-Rite Vs. Poseidon

If you end up doing cave diving and if you train with GUE, they won't like the Poseidon reg. They have a variety of reasons for this that are not necessarily shared by others.

Anyone travel to the Carribean or Antarctic with a Backplate/wing?

I travel back and forth to Japan where I dive about 12 weekends a year, plus a couple of other fly-in dive trips a year. Some dry, some wet. I take a backplate and wing plus STA every time. I certainly don't travel with tanks. Your LDS is shining you on for some reason, either seeing the...

    USS Hoist

Maybe obvious, but is the reason for the massive amount of weight so the diver can exert force against objects without pushing himself away? Also, has there ever been a female Navy diver of this type?

Sports Illustrated The Deadly Dive Cover Story
