Do all rebreathers require a bailout bottle on board ?

If you're not deep diving you could get to the surface with a 3 ltr. But there are some considerations: - It is an best practice to always dive with the same config, even for training purposes; - As already metioned, you don't have a lot of gas in a 3 ltr. Time to get to the surface is very...

DIR- GUE Why are non-GUE divers so interested in what GUE does?

According to these figures 12% of solo divers did'nt make it to the surface alive, apparently 88% of the other fatalities died while starting the dive with a buddy. Would that mean that diving solo is safer than diving with a buddy? To quote Mark Twain: “There are three kinds of lies: Lies...

DIR- GUE Why are non-GUE divers so interested in what GUE does?

I think a better way of describing it is: Generally, every dive I do is a self reliant dive whether or not I'am diving with others. At least, that's how I regard my diving. Don't care if I dive alone or with a team of two others. I rely on myself to stay safe. A good buddy or team can provide...

DIR- GUE Why are non-GUE divers so interested in what GUE does?

I know, I love to dive sidemount. CCR too. Valves low instead of high, no issues with valve drills. For my diving doubles are useless now.

DIR- GUE Why are non-GUE divers so interested in what GUE does?

I passed Fundies with Tech, but failed (provisional) DPV 1 because I could not do the valve drill. I did not blame GUE, but myself for not passing. GUE has standards I did not meet, simple as that. Turned out later I had severe back issues which made me quit doubles diving and GUE all together...

DIR- GUE Why are non-GUE divers so interested in what GUE does?

Agree, this is no way near how I perceived my GUE training. My instructor was firm but helpful. He understood why I was struggling and helped me to get a better diver. Which I did. Fundies laid a base I'am still enjoying every dive. That's how GUE and very other training should be.

DIR- GUE Why are non-GUE divers so interested in what GUE does?

I've never been a GUE diver. I did Fundies though with tech rating. Was planning to do Tech 1 but witched to CCR. For me it's just a way of OC diving with certain buddy's. I don't care much about what GUE thinks about me solo, CCR non GUE style and Sidemount diving. That's my business, not...

    Looking for a lightweight rebreather.

Walking on the boat is more difficult with Sm than BM. Especially on a small rocking boat. On a boat I will always choose back mount. You will get better at it, but it will always be more hassle than BM. Logistics is far easier especially on dykes an steep entries. The Choptima is an ECCR...

    Looking for a lightweight rebreather.

For what it's worth, I dive a JJ-CCR and OC Sidemount. Looking into a lighter travel friendly CCR, so very interested in this thread. On topic: Buddy of mine dives Sidemount with Triton, tight caves also. To be honest, it's quite a hassle to prepare for the dive. But once under it's a really...

Diving 32% Nitrox with "Air" Algorithms

What about thinking what you are doing in stead of letting the computer decide for you? What strikes me most in this thread is how much divers seem to rely on what their computer is telling them. They go up when the computer says so, they won't go deeper when the computer says so and they do a...

"Swim-through" okay for open water divers?

Yep, exactly my opinion. Diving into the Thistlegorm or through the blue hole arch at Dahab in the Red Sea can both be classified as 'swim throughs'. However, imo they are in a very different league. I know some OW divers without Cave training and in OW gear (air) that did both. The...

    Question CCR for recreational depths

Agree, but four minutes not paying attention to your CCR while it's flashing red in your face? Maybe one should pick an other hobby? To me there no valid reasons for not paying attention to the CCR. If you're too busy, bail out and go OC just to be save. A CCR requires you to pat attention all...

    Question CCR for recreational depths

Got that, but when your setpoint is 0.7 it has to drop a lot to be dangerous. I have my controller warning if I go below 0.4. Going to 10% (=0.1) is quite a drop from 70% (=0.7). Or I am missing something here?

    Question CCR for recreational depths

Choptima and Triton are interesting options for sure. Specially for flying vacations. Buddy of mine dives Triton with Xdeep sidemount. It's a complex rigging however which takes quite some time to get used to. JJ-CCR rigging is cleaner and more monolithic which I like for boat diving.

    Question CCR for recreational depths

As I understand the real problem is the weight on your back? You should ask yourself if a CCR is the right tool for the job. A CCR is a complex way of diving which has benefits, even shallow, but also drawbacks. What I would suggest is to assess what you really want and need. Maybe sidemount...

RAID vs SDI vs GUE vs...

GUE is more restrictive in course planning in my experience. One of the reasons I did not continue with GUE. The other being I don't like their CCR setup at all. Both are good courses however.

RAID vs SDI vs GUE vs...

Of those I would consider TDI or IANTD. Both are more recognized than CMAS as tech organizations.

Question Sidemount rebreather as a first rebreather

I'am a backmount JJ-CCR diver. I don't know much about sidemount rebreathers, but to my knowledge teh main issue with SM rebreathers is flooding and being less easy to recover from a flood. As a new rebreather diver you're likely to (partially) flood the unit at least once. Therefore it is...

    Pre-breathing procedure

I pre breathe my unit to know it's not doing strange things. SO I monitor pO2 levels, but mostly how quick they react to changing O2 levels. I have no illusion I will spot any serious O2/CO2 problems on shore.

    Air integrated or no?

That's the real question. For me: back mount -> nope. Sidemount -> yes please. CCR -> yes please. For me it all has to do with the config. With CCR I do not need to know how much gas I have, knowing that I have enough gas (meaning no leak) and knowing my O2 is open is very important to me. So...
